Well my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is the founder of Acuity Scheduling, the slickest way for businesses to automate and manage their appointments online, allowing clients to schedule themselves.

What they say in the love letter, and how they phrase it and show off their personality, is the single most important way that we screen for fit within the company. But how did he take this fun loving approach and build something so needed by business across the world? Well it all started close to home, when he watched the struggles his mom was having running her business As he says "My mom is a massage therapist. She was self-employed for the longest time. I ended up seeing her going back and forth with clients, reminding them, getting calls that, “Gertrude just got her kidney stones removed, so I won’t be able to come in,” and all these little stories. There were things that weren’t really her job. She was spending so much time on the phone beforehand and after hand and scheduling appointments that I thought that there had to be a better way. That’s where Acuity was born." Find people pain points. Solve that problem and BOOM you have a business on your hands. Which makes it seem a lot more simpler than it really is, but is still just about right. So when did he realise that his fledgling product was not just going to be something his Mom used, and start to want to market it in the right way? And what was the tipping point that allowed it to take hold and stand on its own two feet in the business world? My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady who believes one hundred percent in the words of Joseph Campbell (Follow your bliss and the Universe will open doors, where there were only walls.) But for many years her thoughts were driven by expectations far from remarkable, She was solid, dependable and in a career which was nothing more than traditional. As she says “I became a senior high school science teacher, driven by my passion for teaching about health and the human body. I loved and excelled in my work, and thought I would retire from this position in my elderly years. However, after a deeply transformative and unexpected personal and spiritual awakening that began in 2006, I ended up resigning from my teaching position and officially retiring in 2009. Having just come out of my 20s, and driven to never have a “job” or work in any traditional setting again. I wanted to be responsible for my own destiny and was not interested in conforming to the cookie-cutter standards and expectations set out by society. And so despite everyone’s objections to me leaving a secure job that I loved, I was driven by the voice within that was hard to ignore if I was going to be true to myself and live in alignment with my passions and values.” And so with no great plan, but hustle, passion and the ability to open doors that even the universe couldn’t, she is now the creator of the Healthytarian lifestyle, based on fresh thinking, smart eating and mindful living to empower individuals who wish to take a deeply holistic approach to their wellness. She has also created video shows on her two web channel networks EBTV and Healthytarian, that feature her own teaching and other guest experts to inspire, empower and motivate people into positive action. So when she decided to walk out of her career did she have any idea that this was the direction that she would go for? Dear David, It’s your favourite Hungarian listener again. Last time it gave me such a good feeling that you started your episode talking about my review. It made my day that I heard that I’d made yours. So today I’ve listened to the episode with Milana Leshinsky about ‘Simplicity’. You both have agreed on that we – the newbies in business – shouldn’t even write business plan cause we have no idea who to follow and what we can achieve. I am on a different opinion. I think that if I find a company that I like and it’s working then it’s better to follow cause WE HAVE NO IDEA. So someone who has already experiences running a business knows better and would give us a clue, right? Also, we can learn from other apps – how they’ve reached their target audience. The other thing is that I’m finishing my part sooner then my business partner. I’m responsible for the design, figuring out the structure of the app and what the user should see and how they want to use and I’m also writing the business plan (!) :D. I think it is important to summarize what we are building for whom, when and why. But he is responsible for all the technology part, like programming the app and building a web server (if there is such a thing). So the question is if I should help him with his tasks or we should stick to the basic roles and I can improve my part. So by the time he is finishing the prototype I will already have several plans what to do with it. But do we have time in such a field? Or should we involve more people – ones who know more about programming? But then it’s risky that we are loosing control. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, David!

So this lady has hustled, and worked her way to where she is now able to see that just five minutes a day can make all the difference. But how did she discover the five minute rule? He has been on my radar for awhile, but for some reason or not has not been given the opportunity to join up his dots. He is a man who has blended so many vitally important skills being used in the online world today into a rocking and rolling business.
He is a Financial Planner, Podcaster, Video Blogger, Social Media Trainer. Managing Director of Jacksons Wealth Management, and best of all can teach us how to take control of our cash in ways that simply are life changing. As he says "I am a Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Planner providing fee-based holistic financial planning advice in Penzance, West Cornwall. I am also an award-winning podcaster and video blogger. My passion is to spread the word that anyone can take control of their personal finances. I am fulfilling this passion via my financial education website and podcast, MeaningfulMoney. Through video, podcasting and social media I am reaching thousands of people every week with my simple financial planning message I set out to provide simple, accessible financial planning information to the masses, and decided that video might be a good way to do this, and through trial and error, built a site full of basic instructional video. Through my work with this site, I was awarded IFALife's Social Media Financial Adviser of the Year award 2010 and I won the Professional Adviser Financial Education award in both 2011 and 2012. Book Launches can be a nightmare, but not with the book launch king on your side.
Today’s guest is a special man to have on today’s episode, which is the official 500th interview that I have recorded. Not of course the 500th show we have released, but the 500th time that I have sat down with a mover and shaker to record an interview for the show. And what makes it even more special is this guy was the first interviewee that I ever recorded with nearly two years ago. Yep, when I was nothing more than a man with a dream to become a podcaster, with no profile, confidence, social platform, then if it wasn’t for him then there was a good chance that the show wouldn’t be around today. So send all your complaints to him as he could have nipped it all in the bud right at the very beginning Now on that first episode we talked about how he had left the military with a desire to travel the world and create a business for himself on his own terms. How he would sit on his bed in his baracks and start creating something that he could show to the world and be proud off. But wow, hasn’t it all changed since we last spoke, as it now seems that not only does he have the belief in what he can achieve, but also the world does too. As he is creating products, podcasts, books and income faster and faster. Amy, mentioned that she was desperate to leave her life in finance and would like nothing more than to create a life coach business but is struggling to overcome the mental roadblock of getting the business off the ground. She feels that she needs qualifications She needs a track record of success. She thinks she needs everything to be lined up ready to rock. But of course as we see everyday on Join Up Dots, and this is the whole theme of the show, you make it up as you go along. You start your business and build the experience as you go. Nothing and I mean nothing can replace experience. So in this episode of Join Up Dots, we not only answer this problem, but we also tackle another quite unusual question posed by a listener in Australia. Todays guest joining us on the Join Up Dots free podcast interview, is Dov Baron an Elite Mind Strategist specializing in the Psychology of High Performance Leadership. He serves as a mentor and adviser to corporate, creative and personal leaders. His company Baron Mastery Institute is the only resource for training tomorrow’s leaders in the implementation of “The C.O.R.E Affluence System for Leadership”. Being born in the UK in the late 1950’s, even as a child he became fascinated with the undercurrent of human psyche. By the time he was twenty-one he had left his home country to travel and study many spiritual philosophies under a variety of spiritual masters. In June 1990 while free climbing in British Columbia, at approximately 120 feet, he reached for a rock that dislodged a bigger rock. This rock hit him in the face and sent him hurling onto the jagged rocks below. It was a tragic moment, a moment that might have ended his life, and in fact, in some ways it did. Now he describes that moment like this, “On that day I fell 120 feet from a self-imposed pedestal and landed on my ego.” It was the end of the person he had been and in many ways the birth of “The Accidental Guru.” I love this story, even before we have started the show, as it proves that there is no right time to start something, other than now. It’s you that makes the decision to embrace your true self, and not the version of yourself that is being shown to the world. And our guest is doing just that and through his books, coaching, and leadership blog he is doing just that. So what was the person like before the accident, and does he look back with fondness or frustration as to the path he was on? My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who is known as one of the top Online Marketers in Australia, and thrives on teaching people, and delivering targeted leads to his customers. He started with his own computer support business in 2003, and then moved to online businesses and has been working from home full time since 2008. During that time he has became a top 100 Clickbank affiliate, earning commision on automatic pilot. However it hasn't always been plain sailing as a couple of setbacks he has dealt with over the years included having his Google Adwords account suspended (90% decrease in income overnight!), and his Youtube account also (hundreds of videos and traffic and sales gone overnight). So how did he get past those "Oh my god, why is this happening to me...?" moments that we all have to deal with as we build the dream? Well we will find out, but he has certainly done just that, as he is back on top (where his efforts deserve) And now he has pivoted and helps businesses create lead generation campaigns on Facebook and Google that bring in at least a 5:1 return on investment. And that my friends is what we strongly suggest on Join Up Dots. Start creating your online venture whilst still working for a living until that moment when you can step away and go for it bigtime. And today's guest is certainly going for it big time with his new platform teaching the world to smash it on Amazon Europe. Before starting his Amazon Europe journey, our guest had zero experience with running an online business. After university, he joined the corporate world in London but rapidly realized that it was not for him and so after launching his first Amazon brand in 2014, he was soon able to quit his job to travel the world and network with other successful Amazon sellers from around the globe. Today, he's generating 6 figures of revenue per month from over a dozen products in Europe. His experience led him to develop a specific, step-by-step system to find success with every product launched and now has developed his company FBA Frontiers because so many sellers he met had great businesses on Amazon.com, but had completely dismissed Europe. He's since made it his mission to help sellers overcome the barriers to entry in the EU and find success by bringing their products into Europe. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady who has been building her entrepreneurial business since she was a young twelve year old girl interested in computers. And as we show you on the introduction and the show, a career is built by many different steps. Many different phases until you get to what looks like the natural place. The thing that you were born to do. Back in 2002 she launched her first website, a manga scanlation site (translating comics from Japanese & English into Polish) and grew it to 40K views in under 5 months and even managed a virtual staff of people who volunteered to support the growth. Jump on seven years, and she was then running a successful photography business, and this was her life for seven years, before stepping back into the corporate world when….as she she says in her own words “I worked my tail off in the marketing agency world, including a stint at a corporate ad agency as community manager and social media/email marketing strategist. This is when I got really obsessed with branding, business development, list-building and all the ways biz owners can create consistent revenue without losing their shit.” The first dots had been well and truly placed, and now it was a case of joining them up with the creation of her own self named Digital Marketing Agency. This is a successful digital marketing consulting & education company where she helps modern businesses and entrepreneurs to grow their presence, make more money, and truly blow up online so they can become leaders in their field. And once again as she says “I freaking LOVE it!” So did she always know that she was gently placing the foundations in place as she went, or was each phase in her life supposed to be her legacy work? In today's world there is a greater and greater interest in entrepreneurs and what makes successful entrepreneurs. We like to think that we can copy their blueprint for success. We like to think that we can look at how they did it, and by being cunning cut a few corners and get their much quicker than they did. But we cant, and more importantly we shouldn't ever want that, as we couldnt then class ourselves as a successful entrepreneur. You see these folk are made, they make themselves. These folk are given the pieces to the puzzle and simply fit them all together. They have to make the machine, to make the puzzle, to then fit the prices all together. They need to work, hustle, dream, persevere, accept failures and go for it bigtime. There is no blueprint to what makes a successful entrepreneur. but there are character traits which we discuss in todays podcast episode. 1: You Have To Have A Vision Before you can ever hope to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to have a vision of what you want to achieve in life. You cant ever hope to achieve something unless you know in your heart what it will feel, taste, smell like. You need to get under the skin of what its all about so you can quite simply start working towards it with the feeling that you are living it already. That is what I did with Join Up Dots Podcast. I wanted to be a successful entrepreneur with their own top ranked podcast, so I submerged myself in the podcasting world. I listened to podcasts. I spoke to other podcasters, and aI created a vision of what it would feel like to have a top show. 2: Be Willing To Work At It? Nothing will ever be given to you on a plate if its is something that is really worth having. And that is never truer than in the entrepreneurial space. Richard Branson wasn't given an airline, he worked at making it happen. Presidents dont just get into power, they work their way up the ranks until they are at the top table. And all successful entrepreneurs know that work is where it starts, and the rest of the world look for the quick route. 3: Network, Hustle and Reach Out To Others Most people starting a business will sit tin their office behind their own computers and just bash out the work. They work in silo, frightened to stick their head above their pc screen as they haven't got to where they want to be. But this is a huge mistake, and if you want to be a successful entrepreneur then you need to start surrounding yourself with other successful entrepreneurs. You will pick up their habits. You will understand the work that has gone into getting them to where they want to be. And best of all you will start to realise that you are already where you want to be, talking to successful entrepreneurs on a level playfield. They aren't any better than you, they have just stared earlier to build their business. 4: Have More Failures Than You Can Deal With. Tying into what we have already seen on this page, and through the podcast, failures are part of the game. You cannot hope to be the best that you can hope to be inf you are unwilling to accept failure as part of the game. Successful entrepreneurs will be able to share stories of lying on the bathroom floor crying "What did I do to deserve this, God?" Well what they did, was try something that they didnt have all the answers for, or the skills for. And they failed because of it. But through those failures you will learn, and become stronger and you will come back ready to claim the success that your efforts deserve. And that my friends is what all successful entrepreneurs now. Its up to you to find the success that you want.

Well my guest today knows. She is a lady who has developed an online identity that is fun, inspiring and very different from what is out there. So one look at her website and I thought "Yeah this is something that I need to know more about" as it plays to the Join Up Dots message of authenticity. She is the founder of The Action Incubator, sought-after speaker, and Bestselling Author of 7 Principles for a More Productive and Fulfilling Life. But more than that is she is a lady that seems to have cracked the code of knowing who she is, what she is, and what her clients want and need. You see if you define yourself clearly to the world then the world understands that you are the answer to their problems and will seek you out. Which makes lead generation, income production and fun swirl around your business like a tropical storm, blowing cash into your bank account like magic. But of course where hs is know was not where she started, and like all our guests she has been on a Leaving the University of Maryland with a degree in Business Administration she worked from 2005 to 2013 for several companies tracking goals, ensuring that systems were in place, and making things run smoothly. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who quite simple should be loving his life. He is a creative at heart and has found his way to online success with several businesses. Leaving the University Of Southampton in 2007 with a bachelor of arts in Music you can see quite clearly how the dots have joined up. As he says “I decided to make a go of professional drumming. I spent a couple of years developing something called Online Session Drumming, where I’d record for bands and musicians around the world from my home studio. To do this, I had to learn to market myself effectively by building websites, getting to the top of Google, and learning how to advertise. I wrote a book introducing this way of recording which got extensive coverage in the drumming press, filmed 19 DVDs, ran 2 newsletters and membership clubs, and the method went on to become a way of life for hundreds of musicians around the world. It turned out that I quite enjoyed the advertising and websites bit of the job, even when I got bored of the drumming. My next door neighbour at the time was a plasterer in need of extra work so I built him a website. The effect this website had on him spurred me to start JobDoneWebsites, which went on to become the UK’s leading tradesman-only marketing company.” You see our guest was willing to put himself into environments where he was required to do serious upskilling on every turn. He didn’t have the answers but was willing to that extra mile to make those answers himself. And upon developing those skills, he was actually building the foundations to what he has achieved today. Presently he is the head ninja at Exposure Ninja an online marketing company that has grown to 35 Ninjas in less than 3 years. An expansion which has been exhilarating/tiring/fun/inspiring/hard work. The results he gets for his clients are he says are “Sick, and we’re hungry and passionate to help more dominate in competitive markets online.” So is this the business that will be his legacy work, or just the start of other ventures? Todays episode of Join Up Dots is a solo show, where your host David Ralph talk about what he considers the four key success principles in life. You see he has been through a hell of a journey and sometimes you need to stop and reflect on what is really important to you, and your business going forward. It's not all grind you know, or at least it shouldnt be as who wants a life that is just work all the time? But that is most certainly what so many people have day to day. Deal with the kids, keep the wife happy, take out the rubbish, dal with clients, do their tax returns, break a sweat at every opportunity until its time to go to bed. Five hours or tossing and turning and then you are back at it. A hamster on a wheel, running, running and running until you burnout. And believe me, I see this time and time again, and have actually done the same thing twice before in my own life. So in todays episode of Join Up Dots I share my insights into what I feel builds success quicker than anything else after receiving an email from a gentleman in Holland who said "David, I have listened to many shows that talk about success and how to get it and I was wondering do you have your own success principles that you follow...thank you Chris H Reed" Let's start with Success Principles One Have Belief In Your Future And Your Actions There is no doubt in my mind that belief is the corner stone of what makes success. You have to believe that you will be able to achieve your dream, even though you dont know how you are going to do it. You have to have belief in something, and like Steve Jobs says in his famous Stanford Speech, it can be gut, intuition, karma whatever. But you have to believe in something. So surround yourself with images of people who are already doing what you want to do, and follow their blogs, email marketing whatever. Look at yourself every morning in the mirror and tell yourself "I can do this. It doesnt matter how long it will take, but I CAN DO it!" Believe that you can do it, and do everything you can to surround yourself with stuff to explode that belief network. Grow Confidence Because Of Your Failures Not Your Successes Success is great, and successes are what we all want. But a success after success life is never going to happen. And in a funny kind of way you dont want them to happen either. You see when it comes to the success principles it's the failures that are the true winners. It's the failures that build the old hustle muscle and makes your ultimate destination even better. So don't sweat it when things go wrong. Don't scream at the heavens "Why oh Why Oh Why!!" instead look at what went wrong and learn from it, so you dont make the same mistake again. And that my friends is the second of the Join Up Dots Success Principles...grow confidence because of your failures not your successes. Freetime = Me Time = Future Building a business is hard. Probably one of the hardest things you will ever do, and its your responsibility to look after your health as much as you do your email inbox. So take time off. Walk away from the business that you are creating and allow yourself to breath fresh air. Spend time with your kids, and your special person. Watch TV, in fact do anything other than work, as I promise you you will be better for it. A human is nothing more than a battery that needs recharging, and by re-charging you will work better. So get the ideas flowing back into your life, enjoy yourself and take heed of the success principles part three: Freetime = Me Time = Future Start Today Not Tomorrow Deep down everyone is scared of starting something new as there is a chance that they will fail. So we put if off. We think that if we wait until tomorrow we will be in a better place to rock this thing to its core. But of course tomorrow never comes. As tomorrow becomes today and tomorrow is well....tomorrow. So the final Success principle is 100% start. It doesnt have to be perfect. It doesnt have to make sense. But start as soon as you can, as what you are aiming for is to build up momentum in your life until it does start to make sense. You are looking to build the belief that what you are doing is going to work, and that only occurs by starting. And that my friends is the four success principles as I see them in my own life, and I certainly think that you cant go far wrong by bringing them into your own. Linkedin Ads Are The Magic That All Business Needs, So Why Do Very Few Business Owners Know Anything About Them.
My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who has built a business around a need that so many of my colleagues need. How to create laser targeted lead generation straight to the heart of the business folk across the world using LinkedIn. After our guest began advertising on LinkedIn in 2011, he quickly discovered its powerful potential for business to business (B2B) advertisers. He was so passionate about the results he was seeing, he left his job to start B2Linked in 2014. As he says " As online marketer since 2007, I’ve managed hundreds of Google AdWords campaigns. I’ve always been fascinated by the lead quality from intent-based targeting. I love the concept of being present when customers are at the bottom of the funnel, and who are ready to make a purchase. Fast forward to 2011, I was introduced to advertising on LinkedIn. Frankly, I figured that it likely wasn’t a good platform because I hadn’t heard of it before then. As I continued diving deeper into LinkedIn, I began to see the value that I felt the industry has not picked up on. In 2014 I founded B2Linked in an effort to spread the success I was experiencing through LinkedIn advertising to other companies B2Linked’s mission and vision is to share the value of LinkedIn advertising with other B2B marketers and help individuals and companies realize the value of LinkedIn as a lead generation channel, and extract more value from that channel. Why Video Marketing Is An Amazing Business Concept is what we are going to discuss with todays guest who is just getting started in business.
My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who connected with me on email, and told me such a powerful story that I just had to have him on the show. And unusually for Join Up Dots, he is just getting going on his entrepreneurial journey, but in a way that you can see he is giving it a go bigtime. He isn't sitting behind a story of woe, saying well it will never happen to people like me. So let's give you what he told me, and these are in his words My name is Paul, and I am the owner of Cassus Media LLC in Pennsylvania in the U.S. I am a U.S. Marine veteran, and a professional musician. Although I am 24 years old (I will be 25 on October 8th), I have been through quite a bit in my life. Cassus Media is a business that I officially registered in August 2017; it was free to register here in PA since I'm a veteran, although my service was cut short due to a stupid mistake that I made. To be honest, I had something tragic happen to me when I was 15 years old by actions made by a trusted music teacher in my life (and my neighborhood). I held this through my Marine training, and eventually cracked under my own mental pressure, and made a stupid decision. But this - this fall from grace, something that I do not entirely blame on myself, but by the sexual scarring that occurred and the man who did it to me - did not stop me from my dreams. Many in my position would be ashamed and become a hermit, and feel as though they are an outcast. I was given an Other Than Honorable discharge status, something solely determined by the Colonel in command at the time (another Marine that I trained with made the same mistake, but got a higher discharge status called General Under Honorable Conditions). I let this discharge status define me for a time, and I fell into the woodworks for a while. I felt that having lost my mother to alcoholism (who I hadn't seen since I was 6, and while serving in the Marines watched her die when I was 22), not finishing my education, and having been discharged from the U.S. military was the end of me. Citizens in the U.S. would view me as a failure, and of course this information could harm me if they didn't know my backstory. I realized something, though: I was still alive. I still had a talent, and dreams I wanted to pursue. Why should I let my mistakes stop my entrepreneurial dreams? Surely, I don't want to work in a call center anymore (which really, really tears me up inside because it's nothing related to my dreams). But I also found a way to use this job to my advantage in a number of ways. And that is the perfect place to start the show. So is he ready to battle his way through the entrepreneurs minefield with the skills built because of his history, or because of them? And where does he see the first step towards his dreams? Creating his business, or creating the intention? Jobs are made, Jobs are given, But the best Jobs dont come easy.
My guest on todays episode of the Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who like a select band of guests have decided to return again and join up more dots. Yes, back on episode 37 of Join Up Dots, when the show was just a baby, and I was finding my feet, he came on the show with his business partner of the time Mark Sieverkropp. They were building the online career advice platform Happen To Your Career, and in that discussion spoke about the hustle, early mornings, and desire that it takes to bootstrap something and take it out to the world. Happen To Your Career, is a place that is built with the owners desire, and passions being its ideal avatar. You can see that the concept would have been something that our guest would have been looking for, so he created it himself. As he says “I have always had an unusual outlook on careers. My wife Alyssa, who I met in high school, knows this to be true. I have left what others considered “good jobs” turned down job offers other people would love and any time I have wanted to make more income have simply figured out a plan and acted upon it. I have to be doing something I am excited about to be happy. Having had 8 positions in the last 10 years (including successfully self employed) has caused me to have many experiences in a short period of time.” I have owned a successful business in contracting, led others as a people and human resources professional, coached business owners and leaders to success, and helped many people develop their careers along the way. I have worked a variety of industries including: manufacturing, retail, government, food, construction and more. Everywhere I went I saw people struggling to figure out what they want to do and how to get there.” So has he got there himself. We live on planet money, so why do we have so much trouble getting some of it?

I have been listening to your shows for nearly 2 years now racking my brains to find a business idea. And everytime I come up with something I think to myself I can't afford this. I can't afford the website but hosting anything to get it off the ground and I seem to be going round and round in circles. Can you suggest any way that I can really bootstrap this so that I can get my idea going? I have spoken to many friends and they say it's a brilliant idea but as I say money is a huge issue and I'm too scared to put debt onto my credit card Thank you so much Jenny Castor, Millhaven, New York As you will hear from the show the quickest way to earn is to use the money we already have wisely. He is a airline pilot, sailor, adventurer, and an author and an avid listener of Join Up Dots. And that my friends is the golden ticket to getting on the show, to highlight your own story to the world. As he says "Following a life changing experience in my 20s, I discovered that our limiting inner beliefs often keep us tethered to mediocrity. Most people are unaware that our subconscious beliefs determine our outcomes in life, for better or for worse. When we begin to change our inner beliefs, we begin to change our outcomes. You can live the life of your dreams! It is easier than you imagine” I used the power of my subconscious mind to manifest a career as an airline pilot at age 49. Since then, I have written three books and know I will become a successful author and ‘in demand’ speaker, using the techniques taught by Joseph Murphy, Napoleon Hill, Wayne Dyer, Tony Robbins, Louise Hay, Esther Hicks, Jack Canfield, Richard Bach, and many others. So is this a man who is all woo woo and sits crossed legged and hums to himself for twelve hours a day? Not not of course, although the Law of Attraction for many has a bad reputation this is a man who made conscious decisions, changed his out look and got what he wanted in life by doing the right things everyday. And so our guest went from miserable and broke, living paycheck to paycheck while working a variety of unfulfilling jobs to financially comfortable and happy. Living on a golf course in Southern California, with views to the Pacific Ocean, with his wife and two cats. So is this something that anyone can do, or does it need a team of mentors, support and years of training? My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man with a fascinating tale of following a course in his life that is nothing but unusual. As the former director of customer and employee relations at TCC, the largest Verizon Authorized Retailer in America, our guest is no stranger to empowering employees through a powerful cultural movement. A 2016 Gallup report found that 71% of employees are not engaged at work, 60% of employees do not connect with their company’s mission, and 60% of millennials are open to different job opportunities and likely to job hop. That is a statistic that is shocking, even when most of us would nod our heads and say yeah “That sounds like me” Well today’s guest isn’t just sitting there nodding in agreement, but he is doing something about it He is trying to change that trend with his organization called “Culture of Good.” The program started when Scott Moorehead, the CEO of TCC Verizon wanted help to change the culture of his company of 3,000 employees at 800 stores across the U.S. And ever since then, this cultural movement took off and has spread across the country by helping companies inspire employees to have a positive impact in their community and the world. Ultra Running Across America Was Just The Start Of It All!
My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who has been on the show before, but is so inspiring in so many ways its a shock that he hasnt been on again until now. He is a professional speaker, and record breaking businessman, who focuses in on Business mastery and also has the “come on guys you can do the impossible you just have to start taking action” vibe nailed down too. He can help us all get the champion mind-set and build the strength and courage to tackle the “impossible” head on. But his life didn’t start in such a positive way, as at fourteen years old he was hit head-on by a drunk driver while riding his bicycle. The neurosurgeon said, “If he survives the night, he will be a vegetable for the rest of his life.” And certainly the diagnosis looked accurate, as he was in a coma for four days, in casts and rehabilitation for a year, and suffered problematic effects lasting many years. After the accident, life was a cycle of ups-and-downs until he learned the tools and strategies he teaches today. He started his professional career as a carpenter and exceled with woodcraft, and then created his first business at age 24, when he entered into the residential contracting and real estate investment business. But it wasn’t until after a divorce whilst still a young man, did his life really start to find traction and he began to fire sparks across the world. In 2011, he decided he wanted to do something amazing. He wanted to make a difference. He wanted to leave his mark. So from a casual runner, in just nine months he went to running 2,621 miles across America joining the ranks of the most elite ultra-runners in the world. For 100 consecutive days, he ran a marathon distance, and then gave an inspirational keynote speech to at-risk groups and donated 10,000 of his books “Dream Big Act Big” to the audiences he met. He ran into New York city waving a huge American flag, surrounded by hundreds of runners, and entered the record books. And since then he has continued to provide inspiration to everyone that he meets, undertaking many challenges that so many people would look at as daunting and undoable. So what is it about the world today that sees the challenge too big to even start taking action on? And was there a moment when he realised that he had the mental strength to tackle anything? Travel blogs make great reading, but do travel blogs make a good business?
Today’s guest joining us on the Join Up Dots podcast believes in travel, more travel and then when she is finished and wants a bit of rest: Travel.
And this is not the pack your bags for two weeks each year, or for as many weekends as you can get, kind of adventure. She is a believer that “Your life does not have to fit in a box.
You don’t have to live behind the picket fence, slave away at that full-time job that sucks you dry, and the monotonous peak hour traffic runs. You can have the picket fence and a job you love of course, but, we’re pretty sure you at least want to escape your everyday life for weekend getaways or a three-week vacation every year.” But what is the fascinating thing about today’s guest, is how close she came to buying into the status quo that life seems to be lived by. Settling into the routine or a life lived on other peoples terms. After meeting each other, falling madly in love and then beginning a five year honeymoon as they travelled the world teaching English, things came to a halt As she says “We returned home after the honeymoon and hit a major slump. This travel life we loved was over. That thinking changed everything and before we knew it we were chasing money making schemes all over the world trying to get the riches we needed to keep travelling. Let’s just say $500,000 and no self-esteem later we woke up.” “Why do we need to wait until we have the money to live what’s in our hearts? Why not just start with what is in the heart today?” And with that thought, and I’m sure more than a touch of apprehension they set off on what has become their life, travelling, blogging and helping others to buy into the start the dream today mentality with their top ranked blog “Y Travel” and now with two children in tow, their success, and ability to grab more experiences in a month than most of us have in a lifetime is assured. So what was it about the nomadic lifestyle that had such a pull on them? And is it something that they think everyone can do, or does it take a certain type of mindset? On today's show we talk about what authenticity means in a business, and can you create a business that brings your authentic self to the fore. Well, this week we had an email sent to us at Join Up Dots by a fellow podcaster, who asked to come on the show and then gave us some big advice. He told us that he felt that the vibe of our show wasn't right, and by doing silly stuff, voices and the like we wouldn't be taken seriously. Now this is a big statement to make, as why does he think that we want to be taken seriously anyway? And what is serious about being a podcaster who delivers conversational, motivational content to the world everyday? Isn't it about being yourself, and authentic to both your message and your listeners? You see when we started Join Up Dots, we were aware that the show had to be different from every other show out there. We knew that we had to do things differently, so that we could be so authentic that we ended up having no competition, and would climb to the top of the charts. And so we did little things, like making jokes, speaking in silly voices and just being ourselves. These things could not be copied by anyone, so in the chance that we achieved our aim and got to the top of the charts, then it would be very unlikely that other copy cat shows would spring up everywhere. Now this, guy suggested that by doing things our way we would be holding ourselves back and not taken seriously? But seriously where? Do we listen to Billy Connolly and Jerry Seinfeld and think that they aren't serious about their craft as they want to make us laugh? Do we look at Jimmy Fallon and think "Man he is so unprofessional" just because he looks like he is having a good time? No, not at all.....we love them as they are authentic to themselves and being true to the talents that they possess. And that is where this podcaster who wrote to us made a big mistake. If someone is being truly authentic and making it seem effortless, in fact they are working in the sweet zone, where talent meets genius and that is serious business. They have mastered what they bring to the table and do it better than anyone else, which builds loyalty of audience, followers and authority in the market place. They have become their own competition, so actually have no competition. So if you are building a business and want to live a life on your own terms, then seriously consider "How you are doing" something and whether it feels "Good and Easy" And if it does, then there is a good chance that you are being truly authentic to yourself and will stand every chance of winning the game.

And it's not a surprise as quite simply to me, it looks like she is having the time of her life. And unusually for most guests who have come on the show, it appears a pretty straight line to where she is today, but of course that probably isn't the case. Back in the day as a young girl, she would run around with a camera and create silly YouTube videos. After family and friends told her that she should pursue a career in video, she went to the Seattle Art Institute to get her degree in Filmmaking. Which she did, and then set off working for several video companies before starting her own rocking and rolling at Serious Take Productions. And cleverly she didn't just use her skills in video to make her success rapid, but the power of connections. She is the owner of Ash Said It LLC, which is a full service public speaking boutique, hosting receptions, fashion expos as well as upscale soirées. Which sounds great, but its the joining up the dots which is the most important part of this show. So how did the ex-military lady transition from Uncle Sam to Fashion Avenue? Well as she says “I had no plans to build a company. The thought never even crossed my mind. The past few years have been tough. I took care of my mom for 3+ years, and being a full time caregiver is a lot, although I would easily do it again. My mother never taught me how to be a lady. She showed me through her actions. She never let anyone take advantage of her meek yet resilient spirit. Thank God I inherited that spark! I buried my mom in 2014, which was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done in my entire existence. I was lost. My heart was no longer in military service. I needed to leave but I had no blueprint on where to go. I did many odd jobs that year. Helped build multiple brands & had nothing to show for it. Then one day a light bulb went off in my head. Why the heck am I wasting time helping people disinterested in helping themselves? Why don’t I pour my 13+ years of industry experience into something I can call my own. That’s when Ash Said It was born! And at that point we will start the show, as it is a moment that every one of our guests have hit in their own lives. That moment when they realise that their life is their own, and everything they do should be on their own terms. It’s the responsibility to create their own future. In today's show the amazing host of Natural Born Coaches, Marc Mawhinney allows us to share an interview he recorded recently with myself. Yes, your friendly neighbourhood podcaster David Ralph was grilled by the main man regarding what I have done in my life to create a global hit show. You see most podcasters spend a ton of time sitting infront of their pc's either tweeting, adding content on FB, and a ton of different promotion. It's a total killer and for many podcasters it signals the end of their show and the desire for global domination. On Join Up Dots the amount of time that we spend creating the show has gone down and down, to just three days per month due to scheduling systems and social media rules. What I hear you cry? Join Up Dots only takes three days per month, how is this possible. Well the same with every job in the world, you can choose to do the things that brings the greatest results and forget the things that don't. Which we like to call the sweet spot, or said in another way the 80/20 principle. This is where you only focus on the things that work for you, as long as you can find those things. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who for many people across the world needs no introduction. He is one of the worlds best selling authors, a musician, one of the stars on "The Secret" and one of the most popular and powerful copywriters from the past 25 years. Born on December 29th 1953, in Nile, Ohio our guest was raised in a household like millions across America. It was a household that was hardworking but didnt have a lot of money to spend on luxuries. But there was support, and love, and a roof over his head. Step on a few years, and our guests life had turned on its head, leaving him at a position that many people would have struggled to overcome. He found himself homeless, broke and alone in Dallas, far from home. He lost his entire savings, about $1000, to a company promising overseas pipeline work. But instead of getting himself back to place he called home, he was was too embarrassed to return to Ohio. Instead he survived the streets of Dallas, sleeping at the bus station, on the steps of a post office and in church pews. However instead of playing the victom, he focused 100% on the vision that he wanted in his life. To be an author of inspirational books. And little by little he held firm to this vision and changed his circumstances, to become the inspiration to millions that he is today. So when he was at his darkest points, were they really dark or just a moment that helped point the way to the future he wanted. My question is, is it important to have the profile first or the business. What I mean by that, is I seem to be spending so much time on website design and creation that I'm not getting anywhere close to actually making a proper business and earning money. I'm now wondering whether I should not worry about the website and the profile but just go out and find customers? Can you suggest a way that I can break my addiction because you seem to have mastered it amazingly well and I now can see that I have a problem thank you so much Melanie Connors. There are many things that will surprise you from a Steve Jobs biography.
We all feel that we know the man well.
We have read the stories of success, heard the tales of peculiar behavior and used the products that the man left behind.
But what you will find when you start researching Steve Jobs, is a man who I don't think anyone will truly understand.
A man with so many layers of personality, and distinct characteristics, that we all had the potential to see the type of person that Steve Jobs wanted us to see.
So where do we start on the Join Up Dots take, on the Steve Jobs Biography?
Well we can clearly see on the Join Up Dots timeline, that Steve Jobs was from the moment he was born looking for identity.
Steven Paul Jobs was brought into the world on the 24th February 1955 in San Francisco California, by two students of the University of Wisconsin, who for whatever reason felt that this new born boy, who would grow up to become the king of techonology, was not theirs to keep.
Joanne Schieble and Abdulfattah "John" Jandali, played such an amazing part in bringing this child to the world, but would also play such a small part too, and gave the young Steve Jobs up for adoption shortly after birth.
And this was one of the dots in the Steve Jobs biography that Steve spoke so candidly about in 2005, when he addressed the graduating students on Stanford in a commencement address that has become a firm favourite to the world.
Not least becoming the basis of what became the theme behind the show “Join Up Dots with David Ralph”
The Steve Jobs Biography is a fascinating tale of clearly defined dots that shape what he was going to become right from the start, which would make it fascinating if we could ever go back in time and show the young Steve Jobs the steps that he should take.
Would he follow them, or would this young child with such a fascination for technology, and understanding of the components that made early electronic devices work, listen?
Well probably not, but you can see in the Steve Jobs biography those dots were clearly working in his favour right from the start.
His adopted parents lived in Mountain View California, which would fortuitously become what is known as silicon valley in later years, planting the budding entrepreneur in the centre of where he would later go on to rule.
His father, Paul Jobs who worked as a Coast Guard veteran and machinist, also had an interest in electronics and would show his young son from the confines of the family garage (the birthplace of Apple) how to take electronic devices a part, and then have the confidence to put them all back together.
Paul Jobs could have had fishing as a hobby, but once again the Steve Jobs biography shows that the skills that he would later utilize to such astonishing success were laid before him.
Yes of course, he needed the interest and persistence to make these skills work, but Steve Jobs was nothing but tenacious when that interest was in evidence.
A completely different Steve Jobs, to the one we would see throughout his career when he was bored, or things didn't quite go his way!
And those opposing, and not so dynamic and conscientious personality traits, were more than evident to everyone during his schooling. Steve Jobs was an innovative thinker. He could see things long before most people had started to even consider there was even something to be seen.
Which meant that during school, he struggled with the confines of formal schooling, and the structure of his lessons which as we all know, more often than not are anything but innovative.
The young Steve Jobs, would attempt to keep himself entertained by playing pranks and creating mischief, even once being bribed by his fourth grade teacher to get his head down and study.
But there was no getting away from the fact that being born to two University graduates had provided him with the genes of intelligence. And school tests, even from a boy who had little interest in the work were a breeze. He would sail through the testing with such apparent ease that the school administrators were keen to push him ahead to High School, which his parents were reluctant to sanction.
So already at school age, the Steve Jobs biography shows that we have a child who is living smack bang in the middle of the soon to be formed Silicon Valley, had an interest in electronics, possessed an innovative and questioning mind, and was born in 1955.
And this last fact is probably one of the most interesting of all, as Malcom Gladwell attested to in his bestselling book the Outliers” in the chapter “Timing Is Everything”
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen was born in 1953, Apple founder Steve Jobs in 1955, Sun Microsystems founders Bill Joy and Scott McNealy in 1954, Bill Gates in 1955.
Which made them the prime age when the first do it yourself home computers came to market in 1975.
Old enough to see the potential, and risk their futures by working on what someone already established in a career in computers would consider too much a risk to take on.
But not old enough to be already settled down with children and responsibilities, frightened to take the leap of faith and risk what they had already gained in life.
All of them fascinated with what was in front of them, and on their own paths to becoming household names in computing, making them richer than anyone could hope to be.
So we are building quite a list of dots on the Join Up Dots timeline, and of course the Steve Jobs biography.
We can now add perfect timing of his birth, to the perfect location, an interest in electronics, questioning mind, and a passion to go against the norm.
We can almost see already, the Steve Jobs that we would see a few years later, in the young man huddled over a box of wires and fuses.
But no matter how inspired and intellectual a person is, they will need the support of others.
And Steve Jobs found this when he was introduced to Steve Wozniak, who became his future business partner.
The two hit it off straight away, and as Wozniak spoke about in a 2007 interview, it was obvious from the start that the two had similar outlooks and passions. Passions that back in the early years of the 1970’s very few people had.
As he says “We both loved electronics and the way we used to hook up digital chips. And very few people, especially back then, had any idea what chips were, how they worked and what they could do. I had designed many computers, so I was way ahead of him in electronics and computer design, but we still had common interests. We both had pretty much sort of an independent attitude about things in the world.”
And that was how Steve Jobs life was throughout High School. Limited interest in what was happening within the education system, but along with Wozniack fascinated and consumed by the potential outside its walls.
And now in the Steve Jobs biography we arrive at that definitive time in his life.
The definitive time in everyone's life. They are now ready to go out into the world as young adults and create their own paths.
Would Steve Jobs follow the course that so many people follow and play it safe, getting a job just because it's money in the bank, following in the footsteps of his father, or would he strive boldly into a new future, and create his legacy.
Well surprisingly Steve Jobs did neither, and even against a background off disinterest in studying and education, Steve Jobs enrolled in Reed College in Portland Oregon.
This appears a decision that was not well thought out, as Steve Jobs quickly realised that he wasn't suited for further education and made the decision to drop out of college and do his own thing.
And that thing was to start attending classes that he thought would be interesting.
He would choose classes to attend, just because he was intrigued by their content, not because how they would look on his resume.
One of those classes, as Steve Jobs recounted once again in the Stanford Commencement address changed his life. The course was in calligraphy, and developed the love of typography that he brought to the world in such a dramatic and successful way with his first foray into the home computer market.
As he said to the students hanging on his every word on that day “None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But 10 years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backward 10 years later.”
In 1974, the Steve Jobs biography shows, what you would think was a great starting point to his career as a computer genius, and the young Jobs accepted a position with the promising and innovative games company Atari, as a video game designer.
Atari would go onto to dominate the home games console market in the late seventies and early eighties, with children across the world clambering for one of these wooden boxes that they could plug into their television sets. The demand was astonishing.
But Steve Jobs would not play a big part of the success of the company, as just six months later he quit, to go and find himself by traveling the huge continent of India, high on drugs most of the time.
When he did return to the United States of America it was now 1976, Steve Jobs was twenty years old and about get serious about what he saw the future of home computing to be.
Alongside his friend Steve Wozniak, still spending hours and hours inside the Jobs family garage, they would create what would grow to become the most valuable company on Earth.
The two friends set to work experimenting with the knowledge that they had fostered, more often than not unknowingly throughout their lives.
The hours spent fiddling with chips, and electronic circuit boards as a hobby, now finding its true importance in their lives.
Which is of course one of the truths of every episode of Join Up Dots.
Perceived failures, or what seemed like pure time wastage can later on turn out to be the holder of the very thing that you are looking for.
And that was certainly the case with young Mr Steve Jobs.
However greatness does not appear without a belief and a willingness to take risks. And the Steve Jobs biography is littered with incidents where he seemed to have the desire to go further and quicker than anyone else around him would consider acceptable..
Selling his Volkswagen bus, whilst his friend Wozniak sold his beloved scientific computer they funded their fledgling enterprise, and began to work changing the world. Empowering every home to believe they could posses their own computer, which several years previously would have been thought an impossible dream.
With Jobs in charge of marketing— Apple, which they decided to call their untested enterprise, initially marketed the computers for $666.66 each. The Apple I earned the corporation around $774,000. Three years after the release of Apple's second model, the Apple II, the company's sales increased by 700 percent, to $139 million.
Not bad for two guys, who just three years before were unsure as to which direction their future would go.
However this was simply the beginning of what Apple was to become and in 1980, Apple Computer became a publicly traded company, with a market value of $1.2 billion.
By the end of its very first day of trading, and buoyed by its success Jobs looked to find someone with the business acumen and vision to drive the company to even greater heights, and made the decision to bring marketing expert John Sculley of Pepsi-Cola in as the President of Apple.
A decision that among all the decisions made in the Steve Jobs biography was as bad for Steve as it could possibly be.
A decision that would bring Steve Jobs to one of the lowest points of his life, being told to leave the company he had founded.
Steve Jobs was sacked from Apple.
As we had already discovered in Part One of the Join Up Dots take on the Steve Jobs story, he was born at the right time, the right place, with the right interests, and the rest as they say is history.
He co-founded Apple Computer when he was 21, and by the time he hit 23 was a millionaire.
In just two years, Steve Jobs had become a wildly successful, fabulously wealthy global celebrity.
Not bad for a man who just a few years before, had travelled the continent of India, unsure of his path in life, seeking spiritual enlightenment, whilst seeking as many mind altering drugs as he could get his hands on.
And then, at 30, Jobs had the kind of humiliating defeat that for so many would signal game over, he was made to leave the company that he had helped create.
He was in the most harshest of environments hung out to dry in the newspapers, and reports across the world.
Total humiliation was forced on a man who had became legendary, and it seemed could do no wrong.
But why persist to put yourself out there, and face the world's media and consumers head on, if in all sense and purpose you had already made it, and could quite easily live the dream.
But Steve Jobs, was a man unable to seek an easy version of his future and as Alan Deutschman, author of "Change or Die, The Second Coming of Steve Jobs. tells
"Steve Jobs persisted, he had this incredible tenacity. He held on and came back with triumph after triumph, driving the company to new heights, creating the greatest corporate success of our time. It's a unique story."
So how did it occur?
How did everything that Steve Jobs had worked so hard to build, be taken away from him?
And looking back was this the key to his later success, or just another obstacle to climb over as he followed his passions and interests within the computer world.
Well we need to step back a few years in time, when this fledgling company was tittering on financial collapse to gain a clear understanding of the path that Steve Jobs was unknowingly about to undertake.
As amazing as it seems now Apple Computer was a home enterprise, and a bootstrapped company that was prone to the same issues that all new home start ups endure.
Cashflow is the killer of so many dreams, and to raise the money they needed to get the Apple II off the ground, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak knew that they needed to bring in investors.
Interested outside parties who had the kind of financial clout they needed to see their visions begin to prosper.
Finding these people in a myriad of locations, their much needed investments stabilised the company, and allowed the continued development of the Apple II, which just a few months previously had been in question.
However as the two Steve’s discovered during this period, most of the investors were not too keen to see their money handed over to the two computer whizzkids without some semblance of control on their part.
Why would you simply hand over the money for others to use as they see fit, if you also had business experience, and a background of success in the financial and industrial markets of the world, to help direct the returns from those investments?
Why wouldn't you seek a place within the company to really keep things moving in your direction?
And that is what occurred, with many of the investors claiming themselves a place on the board.
And this is fascinating part to the Steve Jobs biography, to which you can clearly see the first division of the dreamer and activator Steve Jobs, and the board of Apple.
Moneymen, believed the way to grow a company was to protect the bottom line, and to hell with the vision of consumer perfection that so intoxicated the budding entrepreneur.
Make the products, shift the products and move on.
Whilst Steve Jobs wanted to change the world and create a legacy.
The skills that Jobs would display in such astonishing fashion upon his return to Apple years later were sorely missing at this time, and the board were of the opinion that Steve Jobs was brilliant, but quite simply too young and temperamental to run the company.
He had not yet learned how to balance the desire and (occasional) ability to create insanely great products with the need to also ship them — preferably on time and on budget. The lack of this skill doomed not just Steve's tenure as the head of Apple's Mac division, but also one of his subsequent projects, NeXT.
And also as most young men are, he was headstrong, full of his own importance, and of the belief that his products were the key to the success of everything.
It was his god driven right to bring his ideals and visions to the world, which would be the saviour of the company.
Which in all honesty was probably right, but there is a way to go about bringing this desire for perfection to the world, which Steve Jobs had not mastered.
He was petulant, abrasive, and likely to steamroller the weaker members of his teams, even though he loved nothing more than people standing up to him. Even presenting awards to the one who showed this brave trait each year.
He would argue, shout, demand and put the most amazing pressure on his teams, with very few thriving, and many falling by the wayside.
In a fascinating interview many years later Steve Jobs reminisces about an old man who lived down the street when he was a young boy. The man showed him a rock tumbler, and he and Jobs went out and got a handful of plain old rocks, then put them into the can with liquid and grit powder. They closed up the rock tumbler, turned it on, and then the man told Jobs to "come back tomorrow."
The next day, the man opened the can and inside were these "amazingly beautiful polished rocks. The same common stones that had gone in through rubbing against each other like this (clapping his hands), creating a little bit of friction, creating a little bit of noise, had come out these beautiful polished rocks."
Jobs goes on to say how that is a "metaphor for a team that is working really hard on something they're passionate about. It's that through the team, through that group of incredibly talented people bumping up against each other, having arguments, having fights sometimes, making some noise, and working together they polish each other and they polish the ideas, and what comes out are these beautiful stones."
People can only find their greatest strengths, and polish their inherent talents by being tested and challenged constantly. By being placed into the Steve Jobs tumblr they ultimately would find what they are capable of. Providing Steve Jobs and Apple with the kind of groundbreaking products that the world cannot get enough off.
So realising, that at that moment Steve Jobs was not the man the board wanted to run the company, Jobs himself set out to find someone that could demonstrate the skills, characteristics and behaviours that he would want in place of him.
And he found that very man, in 1983, when he recruited Pepsi executive John Sculley to run Apple, famously asking him "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water, or do you want a chance to change the world?"
John Sculley was inspired by these words and accepted this position. Not realising that less than three years later, he would also be changing Steve Jobs life too.
Things did not seem doomed for collision when the relationship was first formed, as both considered the other a close friend. Being on the same wavelength, it was a common occurrence for one to finish the sentences of the other.
They thrived in each other's company and were seen to many as a dynamic duo that contributed greatly to the amazing press that the company was receiving across the world at that time.
They complemented each other personally, but professionally were very different.
They had their own responsibilities and demands on their time and energies that neither could possibly understand.
Within the walls of Apple there was no getting away from the fact that things were turning for the worse.
Jobs was Apple's chief visionary, a role that put him in charge of the team developing Apple's next revolutionary product, the Macintosh computer.
John Scully on the other hand, was interested in appeasing the views of the concerned board members who saw Jobs as a loose cannon, and ensuring that the vision of Jobs did not ultimately become the death warrant of Apple.
The Mac debuted in 1984 to rave reviews but disappointing sales, putting a financial strain on the company -– and fraying Jobs' relationship with Sculley.
Jobs basically had created his own team to create his own product, the Macintosh. His team actually having its own building. He even flew the pirate flag there.
As he often would say, 'It is better to be a pirate, than to be in the navy.'
What Steve Jobs had done was ultimately created a company-within-a-company, that became pitted against other parts of the company that actually made money. The cracks were growing wider and wider by the day.
The downfall came soon, when buoyed by Steve Jobs largely overestimated expectations of the Macintosh sales, they found that their euphoria about the revolutionary Mac, which they thought they would ship 80,000 units by the end of 1984, and had produced anything but euphoria.
They had built, developed and stored 80,000 computers ready for the rush, but encountered a return just a quarter of what was expected.
And not only was the figure disappointing, but so was the performance of the Macintosh, that Steve Jobs had deemed as perfection in the making.
In fact with its 128 KByte RAM it was not simply not powerful enough, and there were hardly any software applications available yet.
During the annual board meeting in 1985, it became clear that the work that Steve Jobs deemed as important was not as important to what truly mattered: the financial bottom line.
Compared to the continued sales of the Apple II, Steve Jobs new masterpiece only accounted for 30% of the sales of Apple. It was a dead duck, and to many simply not worth pursuing with.
Steve Jobs became more and more angry and aggressive because of the continuing drop in Macintosh sales, and made sure that he blamed everyone for its failure, other than himself.
So blinkered was he to the world he had created, that he couldn't see what everyone else would consider to be obvious. The failure was not with the product, but was with Steve Jobs belief in the product. The problem was with him.
In the end, he blamed even Sculley for the crisis and wanted to lead the company himself. But this seemed impossible to everyone else: "Steve was a big thinker, an inspirational motivator, but not a day-to-day manager. What was sad was that he could not see it."
When Sculley was informed that Jobs intended to remove him from the company, he was quite concerned, but then decided to choose the company's welfare over his friendship to its visionary co-founder.
Supported by Markkula and the other members of the board, in May 1985, he dismissed Steve from his positions as the vice-president and as the leader of the Macintosh division; Jobs did not have any managerial power anymore.
The record books make it clear that Steve Jobs wasn't sacked, but was demoted. But such was his ego, and love for his creation that is a mute point.
Steve Jobs could no longer be seen as someone that could make the company fly high. His wings had been severely clipped, and now like the Macintosh was a dead duck. Perhaps not dead, but a shadow of what he had been previously.
Jobs, took awhile to decide on his next move, and by and large spent much of 1985 travelling around Europe and the Soviet Union under the orders of Sculley promoting the Apple II.
It was during these endless journeys that Steve Jobs lost interest in what he was doing. He lost interest in the company that he had co-founded. He was depressed and lost.
The charismatic young man from just a few month previously forgotten. He stopped coming to work and resigned from Apple
Jobs said during the speech at Stanford in 1985 that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that ever happened to him. “The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything,” he said.
“It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life; I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple,” Jobs said. “It was awful-tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.”
And so started the third part of the Steve Jobs biography. The ability for him to assess, refocus, play, and learn from his weaknesses.
It was during this period when Steve Jobs, as we see everyday on the Join Up Dots interviews, came back stronger than ever. The darkest periods of his life, showed him the light that would lead him to blaze even more brightly than he had thought possible.
He would change from the petulant, abrasive, visionary, to as John Sculley himself says “The Greatest CEO the world has ever known”
But how did he do this?
How did Steve Jobs pull himself from the dark despair that hung all around him, and start to fight back? A despair so intense that some of his close friends were worried for his safety, and considered his moods suicidal in their depth.
Once again, as we need to do time and time again with this tale, we need to step back a few months to review the version of Steve Jobs who hadn't yet decided on his next move.
The Steve Jobs that was still struggling to come to terms with his demotion from Apple, but not yet brave enough to walk away.
The telling part of the story, is the period when Steve Jobs began failing to turn up for work, and started looking around him.
Freed in many ways from the constraints of his responsibilities, he had time to think.
“Apple was founded when Steve was just 21 years old. So he never really had time to think about big picture, life issues. He obsessed on the same questions over and over: “What went wrong with Apple. What did I do wrong?”
It was an important question to ask, and within its few words would hold the answer to his true world changing legacy, ready to be unleashed on the world twelve years later.
After Jobs returned from the Apple II tour, he met with The Graphics Group, a team of 3D computer graphics technicians gathered by Star Wars director George Lucas.
Steve Jobs began to believe that the high-end 3D graphics business was going to be huge. “These guys were way ahead of anybody,” he said. “I just knew in my bones that this was going to be very important.”
He suggested to the Apple board that it consider buying the company — later called Pixar — from LucasFilm. But the board wasn’t paying attention to Steve anymore, and less than graciously decided to pass on the deal.
Jobs then floated. He spent more time with his daughter Lisa. He gardened. He mused about running for public office. He applied to fly on the Space Shuttle as a civilian, but that didn’t work out.
He went to Europe on business, but made time for museums. He spent a lot of time by himself, or with his girlfriend.
In Europe Steve Jobs met with heads of state, university presidents, artists. He’d been humbled in California, but was having his ego stroked in Europe, where he was still thought of as a “revolutionary business figure.”
Although none of these conversations, and museum visits were on their own important, they were in fact a series of dots, leading to the big dot.
The one that would create the inspiration within him, to go again.
Ready to return to the U.S. hungry for the next big thing.
He began meeting with scientists, who were telling him that they needed a personal computer with enough power for real research and modeling — “a radically new high-end computer ‘workstation.'”
Although far way from the Jobs family garage, where Apple was born, the same passion and ability for creative thinking was ready to ignite again.
Steve Jobs was on the march, and went straight into the boardroom of Apple, to declare that he was leaving start a new company, and would also be taking some low-level Apple employees with him.
And what came next, was NeXT.
Steve had arrived at a crossroads in his life.
After his spectacular rise to the top with Apple, things had turned sour, and he was looking for something to reignite his passions and of course his fortunes.
He was still a very rich man, but for the first time in his life had the stigma of failure hanging over him. This was quite unfair in many regards, but as we see time and time again, the world likes nothing more than pushing a person to the top of the pile, and then delighting as they fall back to earth with the rest of us.
As the story goes, Steve Jobs had returned from one of his many business trips to Europe promoting the Apple II and met a very old friend of his, Nobel prize winner Paul Berg From Stanford University.
The two old friends discussed Bergs work, and it became clear to Steve Jobs that this could be the thing he was looking for. The reason to build a new company thereby restoring the Apple boards faith in him.
His friend told him about his work on DNA, and inquired whether the molecules could be simulated on computers. Steve told him No, but that didn't mean that it wasn't possible.
And those possibilities excited him greatly.
Instead of focusing in on the home computer market as he had previously, he would instead build a supercomputer for the higher education and scientific markets. He did his research as to the computer capabilities he would need, and became even more excited by what he discovered.
Steve Jobs, was reinventing the wheel and giving the world something that no one else could, and as we have already seen he was not short of ego, which is why there is no surprise that the idea appealed so much.
However, if Steve Jobs had gone further and researched whether the higher education and scientific markets would actually be interested in buying such a super computer, he might have had a very different reaction to the concept.
Hindsight as they say, is a wonderful thing.
He was still an employee at Apple, so enthusiastically informed the board of his idea. And on the 13th of September 1985 boldly described the vision he had for the computer, the company, and of course himself.
Everything went well at first, and the board sided with his enthusiasm, even willing to invest in the plans that Steve Jobs had presented to them. That enthusiasm however was short lived, when Jobs started detailing who he would take with him to the new company. This is when the board of Apple turned bitter.
He advised that he would go away with Bud Tribble, the first Mac programmer; George Crow, a key Mac hardware engineer; Rich Page, who had supervised almost all of Apples’ development; Dan’l Lewin, and Susan Barnes, an MBA in finance.
Steve Jobs had presented these people as “Low-level”, but it was clear to all that they were anything but. These employees were integral to the future progress of Apple Computers, and the board felt threatened. With no other option and determined to push ahead with his idea, Steve Jobs resigned from Apple.
Next Computers was born, and it did not start easily.
The minute it was created, the six co-founders found themselves sued by their former employer, Apple. The fruit company was accusing them of stealing their technology. As a result, for its first year or so of existence, the new company could not work on any product in particular, since there was a chance they would lose the trial and give all the technologies they had worked on back to Apple. This didn't phase Jobs at all, and in the meantime he set up to build the perfect company.
Building a new company from scratch needed huge investment which Steve Jobs for once had at his disposal. After his departure from Apple, Steve had sold almost all of his stock out of disgust. So by early 1986, he was sitting on more than $100 million. These were very different times from the earlier bootstrapping of Apple. He no longer needed to entice the investment of others to his new venture. This was going to be his baby. He was very much back in control.
Steve Jobs knew one thing and he did it better than most: When it came to recruiting he ensured that quality and integrity were at the top of his wishlist. He only recruited those individuals that were classed as extremely bright. Next even used to state that even their receptionist had a PHD, and one thing was certain, there was a buzz around silicon valley about this new start up. The hype was growing by the day, and Steve Jobs added more and more computer whizzkids, and extremely intelligent folk to the list of employees ready to create the next big thing in computing. Next appeared very much the place to be.
What made this remarkable was the company couldn't work on anything due to the dispute from Apple, and so were not making any income. The salaries, relocation, logo, equipment costs were all being paid out of Steve Jobs very deep pockets. Not bottomless by any stretch of the imagination, but being emptied at an astonishing rate.
Why did Steve Jobs do this? Was it to prove a point to his old employers, or was it to prove a point to the industry?
Whatever the reason it got him noticed and the word on the street was “look out he's on his way back!”
At the same time as this was all happening, the Star Wars legend George Lucas, came calling to enquire whether Steve's previous interest in his company, working within the motion picture industry was still alive. Steve Jobs had taken a huge interest in the work of the team at Pixar, and had even requested that the Apple board buy the company, but was refused.
But now with the value of the company being substantially less than he was once offered, he decided to take matters into his own hands and fork out for the computer animation team. Once again, whether this was a dig at his old work colleagues we don't know, but Steve Jobs paid £10,000,000 of his own money to buy Pixar as nothing more than an expensive hobby. His real passion was for the Next cube,the super computer that would change the industry, not for a group of budding artists trying to make splash in Hollywood.
It continued to be a very expensive hobby for many years, with him funding it solely something that he was reluctant to do with his bigger passion Next. He finally started to look for outside investors for that company.
Fortunately for Steve Jobs and Next, the Apple dispute fizzled out, and they could actually start getting to work. This occurred mainly by their lack of new creation. Holding back on working on anything new, appeared to be a very good decision
NeXT still didn’t have a business plan or concrete plans for its first product. Apple’s case was based on NeXT’s raiding of senior Macintosh executives and conspiring to use the confidential knowledge Jobs and the others had about upcoming Apple projects (like BigMac).
And that is where it faltered, Apple couldn't then pinpoint any specific trade secrets that NeXT had violated, because they hadn't. A week later, Apple came back with a list of twenty complaints but failed to demonstrate how NeXT had any plans against Apple.
The case proved to be a major embarrassment for Apple and just provided Next and of course Steve Jobs, with a great deal of free publicity: A true win win.
When we look back at Steve Jobs time working on The Next cube we can see quite clearly, two major flaws:
One was Steve's personal obsession with perfection. Everything from the typeface. to the casing had to be perfect. That perfection only made it a pain to build: from the perfect right angles to its materials to its color, it was extremely complicated — and therefore expensive — to put together.
In addition, Steve had made a point on also designing a “beautiful” board for the Cube. All the electronic components, which are usually on several different pieces of plastic, were melded on a single square board that the chairman Steve Jobs considered as beautiful as the case itself. However it was a strenuous problem for engineers to solve.
The costs escalated beyond anything that a school or higher education department could afford. Steve Jobs obsession with making it cutting edge and radically ahead of its time was to be its ultimate failure. He had built the technological equivalent of the Ipad thirty years too soon.
No matter which way they turned, Next and Steve Jobs hit a brick wall. And through all the twists and turns, delays caused the development of what had been cutting edge two years previously to no longer be seen as such. The competitors had quietly brought their cheaper and user friendly machines to market and had killed any escape route that Next had. Steve Jobs had fallen further from grace, and now was being seen as a liability instead of a maverick and technological genius.
Interestingly the forgotten hobby Pixar had started making some progress. Only small steps but enough for the people at Disney to take an interest.
In the early 90’s times were hard at Pixar, and the company had survived several threats by Steve Jobs to cut his losses and close the whole thing down. But for some reason or another, he still persisted with its vision.
Pixar failed nine times over by normal standards, but Steve didn’t want another failure to be placed on his resume, so he kept writing the checks. He would have sold the company to anybody in a moment, and in fact tried very very hard to do just that, but the bottom line was he wanted to cover his loss of $50 million.
In March 1991, he declared he would continue to keep funding it only if he were given back all of the employees’ stock shares. The scheme involved shutting the company down on paper, and creating a “new Pixar” where he was the sole owner. He also fired almost half the staff, keeping only the software programmers as well as Lasseter’s animation department — which was, by then, the only part of the company to bring cash in, thanks to its work in TV advertisement.
The hardware that the company had developed to enable others to create the same groundbreaking animation was classed as finished. Disney who had an investment in the company could never understand why they should be funding a system to teach others to animate. They controlled animation, and certainly wanted to keep it that way.
Nearly twenty odd years after starting the company, the team at Pixar were given a lifeline. After receiving a few awards, and even an Oscar for a short animated film, Disney gave them the greenlight to go for the big one…..a full length computer animated movie.
Steve Jobs negotiated a three movie contract with Disney, and arranged to keep 12.5% percent of ticket sales received. Little did he know, as he had limited experience in the movie industry, that he had made a very bad deal. But I suppose a bad deal is better than no deal, and after years of self funding the unit, he was about to see money at last come his way. Or so he thought.
Toy Story was put into development, and like all things in Steve's life, at that time, became a lot harder to get the product to the customer than he expected.
1993, was now upon us, and without doubt this was the year when everything that Steve Jobs had dreamt, worked on, and developed crumbled in front of him.
A year that many people couldn't have imagined happening ten years previously, when Jobs could do no wrong.
Whether Steve Jobs had dwelled on the same dark realisations we can only guess, but it was at an end. He was 38 years old and at his lowest point ever.
Next computers crashed around him.
It began in January 1992, when Steve Jobs made the decision to allow the advanced operating systems to be used in his competitor's machines. He had taken the view that the uniqueness of what he had created would need to be shared, if he had any chance of saving the company.
This was the first sign of the true failure to come for Steve, although many experts had the view that he should have done this from the very beginning. However Jobs was looking to create the system of all systems. The kind of processing speed that would leave all his competitors in the shade. Not to help them in their journeys also. The death warrant had been signed.
At the same time in an ironic retelling of a previous dot in Jobs life, things got even worse. COO Van Cuylenburg, who was hired by Steve Jobs, betrayed him in a cruel reminiscence of what had happened at Apple some seven years earlier.
Van Cuylenberg had phoned up NeXT’s competitor Sun, and asked its CEO Scott McNealy to buy NeXT and install him as manager of the new company getting rid of Jobs. Fortunately, McNealy had some sense of honor and told Steve about the outrage. Van Cuylenburg left, but Steve was completely devastated by everything that was going on around him.
How could this have happened?
How could all his hard work and investment end up in such a way?
How could it be that everyone of the company’s co-founders, except George Crow would abandon him.
He was Steve Jobs, the genius who had created an industry from nothing. A man who had lit up silicon valley and blazed a path across the world.
What had he done to deserve all this at once?
Next was finished, and in an even crueler twist of fate, his other venture Pixar was in serious trouble too. The lifeline that had been grabbed at when making the deal with Disney was slipping away from them. Disney's Katzenberg had seen what the company had created, and quite simply hated Woody, Buzz Lightyear and all the other characters which we now see as classics.
Together with the majority of Disney’s creative staff, he declared that the characters were unappealing jerks and the dialogues inappropriately cynical for a children’s movie (while he was the one who pushed for such characteristics early in development). Pixar was back to making TV commercials just so it could survive — but it was obvious it would disappear if the work did not start again.
Steve Jobs had reached the bottom of his career. He had lost faith in himself, and disappeared behind the closed doors of his home, spending most of his days at home, playing with his two-year-old son.
Was there anyway that Steve Jobs could fight back from such a low point?
Could he recoup his investment, his self esteem, and be allowed to create the legacy that he so craved?

Challenges and more importantly tackling challenges head on without fear is what we discuss today
Todays joining us on Join Up Dots has a life of highs, lows, amazing self indulgence and a dawning realisation that life is what we make it. At age 13, he moved to the U.S. from India and almost immediately squandered away over a year of his life with drugs and alcohol.
So he joined the Marines to leave that lifestyle behind, despite two doctors telling me I’d never survive boot camp due to a blood condition he deals with.
He not only survived, but found an inner strength he didn’t know he had.
He pushed himself and graduating with honors, but three years after he returned home from fighting in Iraq, the VA diagnosed me with PTSD.
He chose not to abide by that label and instead created a new one for himself: Fearvana—a state of unity and bliss without fear that is only achieved through immersion in fear. Now let’s stop and think about that for a moment.
Instead of running away from what makes us fearful, we actually embrace it and get to the gold on the other side. And that can just be more confidence, more opportunities, more money, or love, sex, or anything that will generally only come when you go and get it. And now our guest since 2012, has left a comfortable corporate job to drag a 190-pound sled 350-miles across the world’s second largest polar ice cap for a month. Swim through underwater caves, has almost been killed by a falling boulder while glacier caving, experienced severe altitude sickness while climbing in the Himalayas, and suffered through heat exhaustion while running across countries. So you can get the truth from this introduction, that this isn’t a person that talks the talk but fails to back it up with action. Today’s guest is a man on a mission, to banish fear, inspire the world and to show people everywhere how to stop existing and start living. Todays guest is an award-winning author, adventurer and sustainability campaigner specializing in human-powered expeditions. Now if you don’t you what this means, just remember the last time you thought you would pop to the shops, and you think “I’ll take the car, it will be so much easier” Well our guest today is recognised by Guinness World Records as the first person to circumnavigate the Earth without using motors or sails. Walking, cycling, and inline skating five continents, and kayaking, swimming, rowing, and pedalling a boat across the rivers, seas, and oceans. This took thirteen years to complete, the 46,505-mile journey and was hailed “the last great first for circumnavigation” by the London Sunday Times. But this is just a tiny part of what this guy is all about. No life is more than just getting his name in the Guinness Book Of Records, as he has also visited more than 900 schools in 37 countries to date, involving thousands of students in a variety of programmes in conjunction with UNESCO’s Associated Schools Program Network. He shares his tales of adventure and hardship to promote world citizenship, zero carbon emission travel, and awareness of individual lifestyle choices on the health of the planet. This will be an amazing story of taking chances, inspiring the world, hardship, but savouring those life experiences that you can only get by putting yourself out there. Motivational quotes are everywhere in life, and its not a surprise when the world is looking for help to create their own futures. When the world is looking for help to truly believe that they can so something remarkable and amazing during their life on this world. Amazing statements of truth and inspiration from the famous, no-famous and go getters through history. So in todays episode we discuss, in response to a listeners email, why we play the motivational quotes that we play, and what they mean to us. If you have listened to an episode of Join Up Dots you will hear four main motivational quotes, from Jim Carrey, Oprah Winfrey, Rocky Balboa and Steve Jobs. Of course the Steve Jobs speech was the one that inspired the creation of the show and is the motivational quote, that pins everything together. But what about the other motivational quotes? Why did we pick them? Well that was a question that was asked to us by Connor McCarthy who wrote from his home in Cambridge Uk, "David, thanks so much for making such inspiring content for us all to listen to. I have been consuming your shows daily since discovering them and I would like to ask a s question. In regards to the motivational quotes that you play...will you ever change them, and why did you specifically choose them to play?" Well Connor, great question as this was the first time that we have ever been asked this, and certainly gave us a great content for another episode. So lets asnwer your questions starting with the first of teh motivational quotes that we play by the American commedian Jim Carrey. A few years back Jim, stood up at a commemcent speech for graduatuing students in America and told a fascinating story of how his father settled for a life of "Safety" instead of going for a life that he loved. You see he didnt quite bleive that he had it in him to become a top accountant, and played safe, for his families sake. And yes, you could argue that he was trying to pay the bills, and support his family for the long term, but in life things are rarely ever for the long term. Life has a way of hitting you when you least expect it, and that was certainly the case when Jims father's safe route got turned on its head as you can see below. "My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn't believe that was possible for him. So, he made a conservative choice and instead he got a job as an accountant." Then Carrey reveals the moral of the story. "When I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job," he added. "Our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which is that you can fail at what you don't want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love." So this isnt a speech about doing the crazy and going for what you want, but it certainly is one about truly believing in yourself and going for something that you can control and nobody else can take away from you. But of course how do you know what you want to go for in life? How do you decide where your future lies, when you are so ingrained in just living life? Well that is why we play motivational quotes such as the one provided by Oprah Winfrey. Oprah believes, that we all know where we are heading we only have to look inside ourselves and listen to our gut intuition. She offers many many motivational quotes everyday, but this was the one the resonated with us at Join Up Dots, and works closely with the "Lets Believe" speech that Jim Carrey delivered. "The way through the challenge is to get still and ask yourself, 'What is the next right move? What is the next right move?' and then, from that space, make the next right move and the next right move. There is no such thing as failure; failure is just life trying to move us in another direction." So we can see that as long as we take our advice of what we want, we believe, and we get quiet every now and again and truly listen to what our hearts are telling us then we are half way there. Sound simple? Yeah of course it does, as all motivational quotes have a way of making it simple, that is why they are motivational quotes after all. But one thing for sure is, it all comes down to you. Nobody else is going to make your life the way that you want. Nobody else is going to put money in your bank account, love in your life, or allow your the freedom to make choices everyday. It all comes down to you being willing to move forward and keep on going, even when life tries its hardest to knock you on your feet and try to stop you. Guess what? Although these are the hardest times in your life. They are in fact the times that will help you more than any of the quick wins that come your way. These are the times that will make you assess your struggles, look at what you are doing wrong, and come back stronger. Said in a different way, these are the GOLD that makes a ife remarkable. Therefore, out of all the motivational quotes in the world that we could have chosen, we landed in the world of movies, with the legendary boxer Rocky Balboa. In the last outing for the Italian Stallion, ROcky delivers a powerful speech to his son, who has lost his way in his life and is blaming everyone but himself for the situation he has found himself in. These are hugely powerful words and simply had to be one of the motivational quotes that we play on the show everyday. “Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place, and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! That is so true. Winning is made by having the toughest jaw that you could possibly imagine. Being willing to take the blows, dust yourself down and then get back up and go again. This time with the knowledge of what went wrong in the first place. There you have it three motivational quotes from three legends all leading us to the words that created the whole format of the show Join Up Dots. These are words that quite literally changed my life, when they landed on my desk. Steve Jobs stood up in 2005 and gave an amazing speech to the graduates of Stanford. He framed the whole talk as "Three simple stories", and within these stories he supplied one of those motivational quotes that quite simply on their own will point you towards the future you want. He said "Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life." So amazingly true and important to really understand and digest. It all comes down to trust. You might trust yourself, someone else, God....its doesn't matter who you trust. But you have to trust that your work will come together. Jim, Oprah, Rocky and Steve provide amazing words individually, but combined they are a wow. An amazing blueprint to follow, for anyone who wants to have the dream life, love what they are doing and being in control of their hours and time. Therefore that is why we play these motivational quotes everyday, and highly likely will continue to play everyday. I remember buying those ice sticks for $.05 cents a piece and selling them for a full $1! Believe it or not, I would sell anywhere from $40-$80 dlls in a single day. (Might not sound much to you, but for an 8 year old was definitely A FORTUNE!) After that, I’ve been jumping from business to business, tried all different industries I could, tested products in different niches, all trying to find what would really make me happy. And for many years, I’ve been focusing on how to generate more money. All my decisions have been based on increasing my income no matter what. However, I now feel I took the wrong approach to success… After a crazy 18-hr drive on a solo adventure road trip I did recently, I came to realize that there was a much easier and better way for me to succeed: To do what makes me happy and stop chasing the money, as money WILL CHASE ME! He is a man who seems to have cracked it big-time, and knows exactly what he was put on this planet to do. And his mission is to make us the healthiest version of what we can be and live an amazing life everyday But unlike so many of our guests who have a childhood that was less than perfect, his life started in a very different way. As he says in his own words “I spent the first half of my childhood in a quiet suburban neighbourhood with all of the love and attention that a child could ask for. I spent the second half of my childhood growing up in some of the most dangerous parts of the inner city, surrounded by gangs, drugs, alcohol, and violence on a daily basis. I was able to gain so much from both environments, and I’m truly grateful for the life I’ve been given. The situations I was in helped me cultivate perspective, resourcefulness, and (most importantly) the power of choice. However, it was in college that my entire world really changed. Not because of the education I was receiving, but because of the devastating illness that I was diagnosed with at the age of 20. Seemingly overnight I was in excruciating pain, I lost a great deal of function in my leg, and I could barely get from room to room in my house, let alone get around on campus anymore. Essentially, my spine was deteriorating far faster than it was supposed to. And according to my doctor at the time, I had the spine of an 80-year old person, even though I was just a young college kid.” And that was just the start of what would become life mission. Starting with getting himself healthy, he learnt so much that he could then share with the world. And now being the founder of Advanced Integrative Health Alliance, a successful company that provides Wellness Services for both individuals and organizations worldwide, podcast host, and a dynamic keynote speaker life seems good…in fact very good. So does he see people struggle in life as they haven’t had the good and the bad, so aren’t aware of what they can deal with? And would he like to go back in time and change anything that has occurred whilst on this earth? Being addicted to anything isn't fun.
So why are we all addicted to the internet and being online?
Well todays show on Join Up Dots is a solo show where your host David Ralph talks about his internet addiction, and the steps he is taking to break free from this common daily occurrence. So how many of us out there will put their hands up and confess to being an addict? Well most of us would say "No...we aren't addicted to anything" We are free to live our life away from the addictions that plague other people, because we wouldn't ever put ourselves into that position, but it's not true in any shape or form. As the majority of us are now dealing with internet addiction, where as soon as we wake up we start checking our feeds and notifications. Well just recently I spent a happy two weeks in the Caribbean celebrating the wedding of my daughter Alicia, and made the decision to leave all my mobile devices at home. I wasnt going to think of Join Up Dots, or emails, FB notifications or anything else. I was going to live a life of freedom and fun. Thats going to be easy to do, I thought. But how wrong was I. Even though I am one of the rare people who do not own a phone, or mobile device, I am still surrounded by people that do. So there i was sitting around the beach and pool, trying my best to switch off from everything the world was checking their phones. And it made feel twitchy and restless. It made me want to grab one of their phones and say "Do you mind if I just check my emails please?" So how did i get to be addicted to the internet? How did it get to the point, that my stomach churned when I first opened my eyes? How did I become so "Unpresent" in my kids lives, simply because of my urge to get online? I have no idea, but in this episode I share the steps I am taking to break free from that, and get my life back on track. Mindset Training isnt normally linked to sobriety, but the One Year No Beer boys do things differently. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who a few years ago was living a life like so many people across the world. Working hard. Playing hard. And spending a lot of his money in the bars on a Friday night. But things have changed dramatically for him, not just in a health sense, but also in a professional and monetary sense too. He gave up drinking in the face of incredible peer pressure, thinking he would lose his edge as one of the Top brokers in the world but soon realized it was quite the opposite. Spurred by this life changing experience he and his business partner, Andy Ramage, another broker, have created the OYNB movement. Which for us all stands for One Year No Beer, where he inspires the world to look for a healthy way of living by speaking about improving all aspects of your life by changing your relationship with alcohol. And now after 2 years alcohol-free he now drinks in total control. He is passionate about helping people change their relationship with alcohol using their 30, 90 & 365 day challenges and in the process discover mindset training in a different way. But what interests me as much as his personal journey, as this man is someone who quite obviously has the entrepreneurial spirit running through him, even though he has for the main part worked for companies throughout the United Kingdom. For example for three years he was the owner of Briaf Ltd, a Sales Outsourcing Agency, offering Telesales, Field Sales and Sales strategy for SME's in Edinburgh, before joining PVM Oil Associates as an employee again. What made this occur? Is this business still around or laying in the dust of failed enterprises? So many questions to be asked. But more importantly with his book One Year No Beer flying off the shelves at Amazon , members joining up for the challenge across the world, and bar owners puling their hair out for loss of profit, does he feel that this is the thing that he has been waiting for in his life? And how do you monetize a challenge which most people could just do on their own? Freedom, Freedom, Freedom....is what George Michael would sing, and my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who has done just that in his life.
He has created freedom where other people see time restraints.
He afforded me the honour of being one ofthe first guests on a new podcast he created several years ago.
At that time he was a personal trainer and health club manager working in the Washington DC area, who through his day to day interactions with his clients could see that his skills would be perfect for the online world. But how do you take an idea and transition to the point that you can have clients across the world. Well first off all you have to get online, then you have to create an attractive offer, and then become visible to the right people. And this he did in startling effect as over the past ten years he has coached hundreds of clients to figure out the #1 limiting factor that holds people back from achieving great results in their life. He came to understand how to develop a strong mindset, and realised that this is usually the missing link to the success that people wanted Without a strong mindset you won’t be able to create better habits in your life, and without good habits you will never gain any serious momentum with your biggest goals. As he says “A few years ago, I started to feel like something was missing from my life. As much as I loved personal training, I felt a calling for something bigger. Wellness had made such a positive impact in my life & I felt obligated to pay it forward. I wanted to make a bigger impact and inspire more people. So what the heck was stopping me? The fear of sharing my voice with the world and potentially failing. I was terrified of falling short. In January 2015, my 25 year old brother tragically passed away. His death was the catalyst behind many big changes in my life & I decided it was my time to jump. The fear of failure becomes obsolete when you come to terms with the fact that none of us are promised tomorrow. Losing a family member makes you start asking yourself the questions that many people put off for a lifetime. I packed my bags, bought a one way ticket to San Diego and haven’t looked back since.” So why was he so scared at getting out there, and looking back was it a fear that was valid? And what is the biggest piece of advice he gives to the world, when they are looking to make changes in their own lives? Today’s guest is a man who started really making momentum in his life in the simplest of ways. He heard a quote that we have heard so many times in life, and more than once on Join Up Dots and this time he was ready for the message. At the beginning of 2014, he heard Jim Rohns quote, “you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” and found that this quote would transform his life! Since then, he has focused on surrounding himself with people who are where he wanted to be in 10-15 years, and what a difference it has made! And in just twelve months he has since seen his income slashed by 40% and being surrounded by the wrong people, to being directly advised by the CEO’s of major companies. And these are guys that are rocking and rolling and really doing amazing stuff, such as the CEO of the sports agency the movie Jerry Maguire was based, the founder of the Make-A-Wish Foundation to name just two. But the great thing about this is that this isn’t a guy who has all the time in the world, as he doing all of us whilst holding down a steady job. So how has he done all of this and still managed to hold down his daily job? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show, to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr Geoff Woods. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is one of the top young entrepreneurs ,battle hardened investor, seasoned trader, advisor to top brands and mentor to world class performers. His mission is to serve one million people, helping them create freedom and abundance by building assets, reclaiming their true resources, and creating a life they love to live. Now i'll be honest that was straight from his website, so how battle hardened is he? How many seasons has his young body gone through to get to this point of success in his life? Well, after a childhood filled with scarcity and hardship in many areas, he’s taken that pain and turned it into a deep desire to help nurture people. He has hustled, connected with the right people, and no doubt been knocked down and got up a few times to break free from that scarcity mindset and walk straight into a life of abundance with what seems a few missteps on the way. Leaving the University of Binghampton with a BA in Biology, he spent the first part of his career as an Emergency Medical Technician before after just one year deciding that a change was needed. He then worked as a Real Estate Agent in New York for another two years, until the entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and he started on the road to where he is today by founding Hartwood Capital. This also only lasted one year and he found himself working once more for someone else as the VP of sales at Open Drives in Santa Monica. And as we see time and time again, these perceived false starts were in fact giving him the skills to really make his mark, and were needed as much as the ongoing success. Now he is 100% self employed and on a mission to change lives across the globe. So with a world of wannabe entrepreneurs fighting through the scarcity mindset, is this the number one challenge that he faces in his business? Decision making is hard, especially when you dont have all the information. But todays guest is a decision making master. He is the co-founder and CEO of Hireology. What this means, as far as I can see, and I am sure that our guest will tell me I am right or wrong on the show is instead of sitting down with someone and using the gut feeling of "I like this person, I could see them doing a good job in this company" you attract the right people by using cutting edge technology. Todays show is a solo show where your host talks about persistence, and how this is probably the most singularly most important thing you can possess in your life. Persistence is probably one of the most admirable characters a person can possess. It’s the ability to be determined to do or achieve something regardless of any setbacks. Now everyone has the ability to set goals, and plans in their life. They set everything up to work perfectly (at least on paper) But once they get into the building process then they find that the words on the bit of paper aren't really working. There are obstacles appearing that they could never have planned for. And that is why persistence is such a vitally important skill that you just have to develop in your own lives. 6 Ways to Develop Persistence The most interesting thing about a postage stamp is the persistence with which it sticks to its job. – Napoleon Hill Developing persistence is a master skill to success. It is easier to relax and do nothing, or just live in our comfort zone, rather than face the uncertainty and discomfort of sailing thru our goals. Plus, the idea of failure and hardship is unbearable. But if you want to create change in your life and achieve success, now is the time to develop and master persistence. Here are six (6) ways to help you develop persistence: 1. Identify Your Wants and Desires If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else. – Lawrence J. Peter Before you can develop persistence and eventually achieve success, you need to first identify your wants or desires. You can do this by simply writing down specifically all the things you want to have or accomplish. List down all your desires and wants, no matter how impossible they are to achieve in the moment. 2. Determine Your Motivation Motivation comes from a deep reason why we want to achieve or have something. If you know why you’re doing what you’re doing, it gives you more energy to keep moving. For an instance, you want to publish a book. Creating a book takes time and patience. If you don’t have enough motivation, a reason why you need to publish the book, you probably can never finish it. But if you’re motivated by the thought of influencing and teaching millions of readers thru your words, only then will you keep pushing yourself to work on finishing the book. 3. Outline Your Definite Action Step Identifying your wants or desires speaks of what you want to achieve. Determining your motivation shows the reasons why you want to achieve what you want. Outlining your definite action step is necessary to know how you will be able to achieve what you want. When you know how to get what you want, it makes it easier to achieve it. To know how, it pays to do some research and planning of what needs to be done on your part. Be specific on each step you need to take. Identify at least two (2) ways and plans on how you can achieve your goals. 4. Keep a Positive Mental Attitude The road to success is not easy, in fact, it’s challenging, this is why only few succeeds. There will be countless times you will be face with defeat and failures that if you are weak, you’ll be succumbing to negative thoughts of fears and doubts. In order to develop persistence and eventually succeed in your endeavor, always maintain a positive mental attitude, regardless of situation. Keep your thoughts focused on taking action towards your goals. Avoid negative thoughts and feelings for it will ruin your concentration and persistence. 5. Build Your Mastermind Group Mastermind Group composes of people who can help you succeed towards your goal. Choose carefully who you will trust as part of your mastermind group. If possible, include only those who can give you unbiased judgments and who has positive mental attitude. You can’t afford wasting your time listening to cynical advices and pessimist people. These types of people won’t help you succeed; instead, they will drown your energy that can eventually lead to failure. 6. Develop Discipline and Habit All your goal-setting and planning will go to waste if you won’t be able to develop discipline and good habit. Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. – Jim Rohn There will be a lot of hindrances that will stop you from moving towards your goal, and without proper discipline, it will be easy for you to sail away. Upholding discipline and good habits can help you stay in the course, even despite difficulties.

Online Courses are what the world are delivering nowadays. And my guests today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview are a couple that know how to build online courses better than most people. They are a couple who quite simply, stopped looked at their life and then made it what they want. And with the greatest respect to both of them, and we will discuss this in the interview they are what you would call normal. A normal couple, with a normal lifestyle, normal kids but an extraordinary way of making decisions and enough of them to make things work the way they want. They are the owners of the Flipped Lifestyle business, where through their own mistakes, successes and consistency they now teach people the route to success in their own business. They teach how to create businesses that work around a family instead of the other way. As they say "In 2012, on a rare day off work, Shane stumbled across a podcast about regular people changing their lives through online business. We started brainstorming about how we could do this too, and started a couple of websites just to see what happened. No one could have prepared us for what happened next. In just a few short months, we were able to make thousands of extra dollars each month through online business. Just one year later, we surpassed the five figure mark in online sales for a single month. My interview today on the Join Up Dots free business podcast is a lovely lady who was kind enough to allow me to spend time with her on her own show Freedom Academies.....Turbo Charge Your Success. Now during our conversation it was clear to me that this was a lady that I needed to get on Join Up Dots, as she has a story that shows all the characteristics that we find in the succesfull. She has motivation. She has hustle And alongside her business partner Laura West, a few years ago found themselves homeless The business they ran together was going south and they were exhausted. They had no option at all but to move into two rooms in the office. They had a problem that most business owners have at one time or another. They were very good at that they did, but nobody knew about it. Thye couldnt get their talents out into the world. They started researching business growth systems, high performance ‘gurus’, wealth creation experts and all the investment strategies they could get there hands on. Within twelve months they had a property portfolio worth over $2,000,000 that they had bought with others people’s money. More importantly the income from that property was double the income from their business that they had spent years building up! They also applied all the business knowledge they had gained, transformed their business and went on to sell it! They did all of this while being homeless, using the leisure centre across the road to shower and working 80 hours per week. They were at such a rock bottom that they had the ability to create huge freedom of choice in their lives. So was it just that the dots joined up, the time became right for them to flourish? Or was it more to do with the undertanding that upskilling your knowledge is the way to go. So entrepreneurship seems really fun? And you want to be an entrepreneur but you are too scared hat you don't have the skills to be one? Well thats not a surprise after all. as an entrepreneur is a super powerful individual that has skills that the normal man just cant possess. They need less sleep than you and me. They don't even need to stop and eat like you and I do. They are the supreme beings, controllers of their own destiny and able to cast a shadow across the world and the rest of us. That is of course the perception of what an entrepreneur is, or at least so many people want you to think that....but it's rubbish. And entrepreneur at its heart, is someone who is willing to try to do something. Accept failure. Accept risk, and go again. These are super powers by any stretch of the imagination. These are things that we all posses, if want to posses them. They are in all of us. I'll give you an example.....and this example is going to be about me the host of Join Up Dots. When I started the show, all I could do was turn on the microphone and talk. And even that small action I had to learn. Did I call myself an entrepreneur? Of course I didn't as I didn't know the first thing about it. But I knew how to take a risk and give something a go. I knew how to minimise the downside and try to maximize the upside (in this case not spend a lot to get going, but try to make some cash as some as possible) And that is what I have done, and little by little I am making more cash and having a lovely life. Now not for one moment would I call myself an entrepreneur. What I would call myself is someone who is willing to have a go, and work hard at something. No super powers at all, just pure, down to earth work ethic and persistence. So if you dont think you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur, dont be one. Call yourself anything but give it a go, and you will be amazed at what you achieve in your life.

My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is with a man who first appeared on the show back on episode nine of Join Up Dots.
As we spoke about on the first show, some people are born to make money.
Others are born to provide value to others.
Our guest today was born to do both.
From his early days in school, he knew how to hustle, zigging whilst others zagged, zoning in on opportunities whilst others looked the other way.
He made money as a young man, and knew that this was the way he wanted his life to be.
But life in school is I suppose “Childs play” compared to what is in store when the high school bell rings for the last time, and your thrust out into the big wide world to fend for yourself.
Our guest knew this and before even leaving high school, was creating a path that would lead him to where he is today.
By enrolling into an MLM course, he learnt the skills of rapport building and developed the ability to create connections with people from all forms of life.
This is probably the most important skill that any entrepreneur could hope to have.
But although a huge step in the right direction, he was making very little money, so knew he had to take a step into the unknown and accept a level of risk that he hadn’t before.
This risk came when he realised that there was opportunities galore in real estate, and before long, with a huge list of tenants paying him rent from properties he owned, he was a paper millionaire.
Not bad for someone only in the 20’s.
However the phrase “Learn to expect the unexpected” could have had been a very useful mantra to have, as boom time literally disappeared overnight.
In 2008 the real estate crash occurred, and forced our guest into bankruptcy.
Despondent, depressed and broke, he had two choices..
One to say goodbye to the good life and settle into a life of “What Ifs” and “Broken Dreams”
Or he could fight back, and restore himself to previous glories.
Well after after rebuilding his millionaire net worth he’s achieved a higher minded psychology, greater financial freedom, and full awareness of the science of creating Success From Scratch™.

Doing the impossible can quite often seem a step too far for most people. But my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who seems loves doing the impossible more than anything. He is kind of normal from the outside, but did deeper and you can see a world changing mission. One side of the fence is a coach, and a very successful one at that. He has has helped clients create multimillion pound investments from nothing, he has coached CEO’s to build thriving companies, philanthropists to set up charities, couples to conceive and lovers to start fantastic relationships. He has helped the intrepid to change jobs, change careers and even change countries. He has helped entrepreneurs to find their dream companies and senior executives to earn promotion to the Board. He is dedicated to serving extraordinary people in recreating their lives beyond recognition. Which is of course powerful stuff for sure but then you see the standout journey that he is on. At least it is for us at Join Up Dots. In 2015 he created the impossible busting Chicken shit foundation, which was created to honour and fulfill the legacy of Rafael Bejarano Rangel, who was tragically killed in Egypt, to bring empowerment, education, and transformation to all people through music, laughter and compassion, and to help re-awaken waning or lost indigenous traditions and support their sustainability and survival through the youth of the world. They accomplish their mission by enrolling the support and voices of Chicken-Shits (ie. those who need to believe in themselves more, even if it’s just at certain times with certain people, and who would benefit from taking stock of the gifts and talents they posses that the world is hungry for, and then sharing accordingly.) Our current projects include building schools in Liberia West Africa and for a community in Mexico as well as youth empowerment and preservation of indigenous traditions among youth around the world. They do this by fund raising, mentoring, providing leadership and raising awareness and through building a global community. Big stuff is going on in this mans life so it is a delight to have him on the show. But what made this English man do something, very un-english, and peer his head over his own garden fence and start to make a difference to others across the world? And does he look back and think, I wished I had started this earlier or did it appear at the perfect time for him to be able to achieve his aims? Sleep and getting enough sleep can be such a huge issue for us all.
Which is why Christine Hansen built a whole business around getting sleep into our lives.

She is a sleep expert who over the last years has positioned herself as the go to person to help you drift off into a pleasant, restful and recharging sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow. As she says “I understand that sleeping, while on sleep medication isn’t really sleeping. I understand that falling asleep, but then having to lie awake for hours in the middle of the night isn’t really sleeping, and I understand that waking up just as tired as when you went to bed isn’t really sleeping either” So hands up….come on people be honest “How many of you have fallen into one of these sleep patterns over the last few years?” Yep, I know that I have, so how has our guest managed to find the solution to something that plagues all of us at one time or another. Fun Fun. Fun is what we all want. And on todays show we discuss fun and how you can bring fun into your life, even when you think that there is no chance. You might be working in a factory. You might be working in a stuff office environment, when the last thing that the boss wants is you to have fun, when business needs to be dealt with. All of us want to have fun. But what does this mean, exactly? For some people, for example, fun is about getting wasted by taking drugs, drinking alcohol, or maybe just staying up very late at night. Fun is making the task you are doing as enjoyable as possible by being playful, creative and foolish. What we mean is fun is learning how to enjoy wherever you are and whatever you are doing, no matter how stupid it seems to be. This is a hard one for many people, but it is a key to having fun. The idea is to make anything fun, no matter how weird or dumb it is, if you look at it right. You don’t have to go anywhere, get drunk, or do anything like that to have fun. That is the key here. You can be humorous, upbeat, positive and happy no matter what other people choose around you. They can all be depressed and sad, and you can have a different attitude. This creates fun in anyone, in any situation. You can see the humor. You can see that people are strange, but not freak out or space out like most people do in this situation. Now, if someone or something is definitely making you very unhappy, then try to change the situation, go home, go away, do something else to change it as best you can. But for anything you do in life, you can certainly have fun and enjoy the process. And why, my friends I ask you would you not to do just that?

Podcasts are hot business at the moment. In fact podcasts have never been more popular and my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who not only is in the same game as me, but he has his fingers on the pulse of what is hot, what is good, and what in podcasting should be left as an idea and not actually brought out to the worlds ears.
He is the Head of Content at Spreaker, is former EVP/CTO at PodcastOne.com and former Content and Business Manager for Podcasts/TV at Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Zune.
He currently hosts the SpreakerLiveShow.com podcast Wednesdays at 3pm PST and co-hosts NewMediaShow.com/live Saturdays at 9am PST/Noon ES.
Which is of course very impressive, but even more so especially to someone like me is the fact that he is a veteran in the field, starting his WebTalk World Radio Show in 1999, recognized as the first nationally syndicated radio program in the world to begin podcasting on Sept 15th, 2004. and has been working in the podcasting field since.
Now this is pre-google, pre-iTunes, and pre the world that we now take for granted.
He is a lover of the format of podcasting.
Is a master at his game.
And is focused on raising the standards of content creators across the world.
And if that isn't something to make you licks your lips and salivate what about this fact!
He is also a Guinness World Record Holder for creating the worlds largest glass of Florida Orange juice.

Fear, fear and more more fear is what we discuss with my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview.
He iss a man that i am proud to call a friend. Im not sure he would say the same about me, but I guess we will discover this through the show. He is the head honcho at Natural Born Coaches, where he supports, nurtures and sometimes gives a kick to coaches across the world who need a little help in building their businesses. And what I love about this guest, as you will see in the show it looks like he has really found his thing in life and looks like it was always on the cards. But as he says "After a decade of success in my past life (real estate,) I went through business closure and challenges that would have caused most to give up. How did I get back on track? With the help of coaches! After years of being a lone wolf, and being proud of “going it alone,” I experienced the power of coaching first-hand, and it really made a difference. So when I was ready to go back into business, I knew that I wanted to be a coach. I wanted to help others like I’d been helped. I dove in and became a coach, and discovered what every new coach learns when he gets into this business … it’s not easy! Jumping into the coaching business (for small business owners), he created the programs that he would use with his clients, established systems, printed business cards, launched his website, a blog, the social media, and waited for clients to start beating down his door. They didn’t! So he started prospecting harder every day. By reaching out to people in his target market, he got consultations and some clients (but too many that I was working with at discounted rates, or even worse, for free!). It was a frustrating situation. So when I finally got it rolling, I knew that I didn’t want other coaches to go through the same growing pains that I did." And now with his podcast rolling into the 500 plus episodes, and people now beating down his door for coaching advice, does he look back and think "Man, I made it truly hard for myself!" Job Search time is hard. You know what you want to do, but nobody gives you the chance to do it. Which makes todays guest entrepreneur so inspiring. As in stead of keeping on the job search odyssey she went and built it herself. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady who has a background in a background in engineering, marketing and management. Which has lead to her creating a business around…. ill let you think about if for a little while……lead generation, personal branding, communications, public speaking, social media marketing, and digital marketing. Yeah you didn’t see that coming did you? And I guess neither did our guest today, but it is true to say that at her core she has creativity flooding through her veins As she says ” I was always an artist and writer at heart, but thought that when starting the job search marketing was the best way to make a living doing something that required creativity. After a few years working in an insurance company, I realized that the corporate environment wasn’t for me, and thats when I made tough decision to leave the comfort zone of my corporate job, forget about another job search and start my own business.” But her adventure had a rough start. There were many unknowns, including her ultimate job search mission. Which is the amazing part of what Join Up Dots has become for so many people across the world. It is where belief grows into action, and action grows into whatever you want for yourself. You cant see the real dream right at the very beginning, you just have to find out the vague direction that you want to go in, and then start walking. Faith, a faith a faith, you've got to have faith. Words supplied by the late and great George Michael, who told us all back in the eighties that no matter what we do in our lives we have to have faith. And that is what we talk about in today's episode of Join Up Dots Faith and most importantly having business faith. Let's get something straight right from the very beginning but when you start growing your business, so many people will tell you that its luck that you need. Yeah, you were so lucky that you found yourself in that position Oh, wow, how lucky was it that you went to that conference and met that business partner! Well let's get this clear when growing your business it's not about LUCK, It's about FAITH. How much do you have? Let me give you some examples of what I mean: * When we get on a plane we have the FAITH it is going to fly! * When we go to bed we have FAITH that in the morning there will be light! * When we leave our house we have the FAITH that it will be there when we return. 90% of our daily activities are solely based on our faith and belief. If we had no faith, we wouldn't even be able to get out of bed in the morning. Faith fuels our very being; yet when it come to getting clients and building our business it seems that there is a faith shortage. If we hold a workshop and one person shows, then we tell ourselves we have the wrong niche. If the first 10 people we speak to say no to our service, we convince ourselves that we hate marketing. Where is the faith? A good friend shared this wonderful analogy with me this weekend about business building... If am handed 10,000 oyster shells and told 10 have a million dollar pearl... I begin to open them. Phew. Oysters are hard to open. 1, 2, 3, 4...Ah. Sill no pearl. Shoot. 5, 6. I cut my hand. This is really hard. 7, 8, 9, 10. Still no pearl. So frustrating. This is a stupid idea. There are no pearls in any of these. I hate oysters. I don't even want a million dollars. And before you know it, there is no faith. Faith is tested when things get hard, when we are afraid, and when our perfectly laid plans aren't so perfect. True faith is continued belief in the face of adversity. True faith is when you have every single reason in the world to have NO faith, especially in business. So, here is how you hold on and keep faith the center of your business development: 1) Be clear about what you want. Faith wavers when it is uncertain what to claim. Claim what you want. 2) Stop being realistic. 3) Stop looking for the results. Not your job. They will come. Your job is faith, action, repeat. 4) Know that our faith will be constantly tested. You pass the test when you continue to believe.

Heath and business is what takes up my guests todays life. He is a man who classes himself as Part CEO, part personal development wonk and part biohacker info geek. Built from his background of businessman, television producer, filmmaker and author he would also class himself as 100% self-confessed serial entrepreneur,, He began his life journey in Colorado (via Wisconsin), where he studied marketing at the University of Colorado. He then graduated from Chadwick University with a BA in environmental studies, then went on to attend graduate school at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied intellectual property law. But it would seem to me that his life, at least where he was always heading started for earnest in 1999 when he started the health food business Steviva. Being boss and an entrepreneur, when you are a lady is sometimes hard, especially when you have children and stuff.
However my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is the CEO and Founder of Boss Mom, entrepreneur Dan Malstaff. She is a mother, author, business strategist, podcaster, blind spot reducer, and movement maker. She is the author of Boss Mom: The Ultimate Guide to Raising a Business & Nurturing Your Family Like a Pro, and with over 9,000 students in various courses and over 10 years of experience in content creation, community building, and business strategy, she grew the Boss Mom brand into a six figure business in less than a year. But was this always a success that was on the cards, or did she go through the same struggles, guilt and burnout that most new entrepreneurs find themselves in as there fledgling business grows and they become boss. She is an expert in helping people from across the globe transition in their careers and find work that is amazing everyday.
Todays guest is a lady who can call herself a true lady of the globe. Coming originally from Denmark, she grew up in the Scandinavian countryside clambering around the hills and fjords happily, until moving to Paris for three years to live in the capital of romance and culture. But now she calls the UK home and has been living in London since 1996. Yep, we have adopted her as one our own. And she has appeared to flourish whilst living in London, as her career went from strength to strength, as she worked hard on a career in Human Resources for companies such as Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and Shell. But it is ok to have a career that is on the ascendency , well actually it’s a great thing, but when you have a career that is going well, but you want to do your own thing, then it can feel quite differently. And our guest knew that her path was going to change She had always wanted to start her own career change consultancy, so in 2005 did just that, and quit her well paid job to go it alone. She walked away from the consistent monthly salary, and started flexing her hustle muscle on a daily basis. The 5 Stages of Happiness “One has to spend so many years in learning how to be happy.” – George Eliot Happiness is very intriguing, the reason why many philosophers who have gone before us have endeavored to explain it. Or why researchers like Jennifer Aaker has studied how we can calibrate what we think make us happy in five life- stages. Discovery during childhood and adolescence, pursuit in our mid-twenties, balance in our late twenties and early thirties, meaning in our late thirties and forties, and savoring from our fifties on. They say that our sense of happiness dynamically changes throughout life and to ever think at any stage that our progress is finished is a folly. Happiness is never static. Our contentment tells us how happy we are. And with changing wants and needs and varying levels of mental maturity, our happiness lies absolutely on us. Happiness is subjective. What made you happy before does not guarantee your happiness in the future. One must adapt and learn. And so in todays episode of Join Up Dots we talk about the five stages of happiness and how no matter what we think....happiness is a choice we make and it starts within in. So here are the five stages that we have gone through when we are at our happiest. 1: Try to remove all comparison from your life It is a killer in our search for happiness, that we spend so much time looking at what other people are doing on social media. And more often than not it's not true and they are only showing us the good stuff that they want us to to see. So don't worry about what other people are doing in their lives and just focus on your own stuff and believe me you will be so much more happy. 2: Free from your heart from hatred A happy heart is a loving heart, and the world will want us to fill it with hatred and anger, Someone cuts you up in your car, and then blames you with a rude finger gesture. Someone makes some cheeky comment that they thought was a joke, but you didn't like. Well to be happy in our lives we have to look at forgiving these things and just accepting everything for what it was. A moment of turmoil in your life and not worth dragging around for a second more of what its worth,....and thats nothing. 3: Live Simply Happiness and living happy can come together so much more quickly if we just look at removing ourselves from lives stresses. Do we need the car that has the monthly repayments or the cable tv that we hardly ever watch? Do we need to go out for meals twice a week, and then have a huge credit card bill each month to pay off? Probably not, and happiness can come together quite quickly when we decide to focus on the things that make us happy, dont cost a lot and are simple. It could be sitting in the garden with some friends, instead of going out in the evening to the pub. It could be just going to the movies, but not spending a fortune on cokes, popcorn and food as well. You will be amazed at how much you are spending that doesn't truly make you happy. Its just something that you are doing each month, day or week. Live simply and let happiness come to you. 4: Give More There is a truth in life that giving a present makes us happier than receiving. It's the giving that makes all the difference. So when was the last time that you did something for someone else, just to make them happy? Probably quite awhile ago, as we are so wrapped up in our own lives doing what we need to do first and foremost. So lets start looking for happy in our lives 5: Expect Less If you can operate in a world, where you accept what life is bringing you, instead of setting such high goals that disappointment is always lurking then the happier you will be. This is the truth, and it doesnt matter who you are, or what you have achieved in life...happiness is never connected with an outcome. We think it is, but that is wrong. So do your best, enjoy yourself and realise that whatever happens, it is exactly what you was supposed to be getting.

Compound Effect is so amazingly powerful, and ,my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who uses it daily. He overcame adversity, lost nearly 100 pounds, ran a marathon, dramatically changed his diet and created an approach to help others live a better life, every day. Fitness is the buzz word in todays world. Are you looking after your fitness? Are you planning on getting fit? As this is the second time I have had the pleasure of grilling her on the show, as she last appeared back on episode 208, where we talked about her rise to the top of the fitness industry from a starting point that was more than a bit unusual. Mastery leads to operating on a higher level than anyone, and will ultimately lead to amazing things in our lives. The more we become experts in our chosen specific areas of interest, the more we can market our talents to others and reap the huge rewards that mastery brings. But of course there are very few people in the world that are willing to go this extra mile to become masters in their field. Think about Michael Jordan, David Beckham, Steve Jobs or any famous person you can think off, and there will have been hours and hours of secret practice. The times when no one was around to witness their additional work. The times when all their colleagues are either partying, resting or just doing the minimum to get by. And that isnt how life works. You need to be willing to suffer for your trade. You need to be willing to find time in your life to work on something, even if it is late at night or early in the morning. So when was the last time that you put in more work than you possibly thought was possible to hit true mastery in your life? Digital Marketing is needed by all businesses, and my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a a lady who is shining a light into the sky that screams to the world "I am here to help, let us do what we are good at!" She is the co-founder of Scoop industries a company focused on growing your services and business with simple strategies for sustainable success. Which sounds very impressive, but when you hear that she grew her digital marketing business from $0 to $200,000 in less than two years, then Im sure that you will be taking out your pen and paper and making some serious notes. After leaving the Indiana University Bloomington with a BA in Pyschology, Management and Spanish, it wasn't obvious that she would now be the co-founder of her own rocking and rolling digital company. World Travel and adventure is what many people crave in their lives, and so It’s with great delight that we bring onto the show today a man who had a similar background to myself. He began his career in the City Of London as a broker, and after a period of time knew that his time had come, to go after what lights him up inside. In fact it was a lot worse than that, as he actually became chronically depressed and knew that he had to do something about the way his life was going. He went from a full-time insurance agent 4 years ago to building an e-commerce business that sold $20 million of physical products in 2016. What is astonishing is he did this WITHOUT using Amazon, eBay, or Shopify, and with nothing more than simple two-page ClickFunnels websites that use carefully optimized sales funnels. If you think that entrepreneurs are born more than made you could well be right. Our guest got his start in entrepreneurship with a pool cleaning business at 16, and has done everything from selling tea, to selling hundreds of thousands of dollars of t-shirts on Teespring, and to now selling 10,000 units per month across 20 different physical product lines. Today, he has built up an email list of 1.1 million subscribers and 300,000 buyers, and is selling the largest volume out of 50,000 ClickFunnels users. In addition to his eight-figure business selling physical products, his passion is helping and mentoring others to have the same success in e-commerce that he has had. But of course you need to have a direction right at the beginning, and then overcome the heartaches, stumbles and falls that knock so many people away from success like this. Morale in companies can be a huge problem and myy guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who currently runs a company called “Humans Working”, focused on 1-on-1 coaching with executives and managers; team-based (or even company-wide) workshops; and ongoing support, to help companies build loyalty and create environments that people love working in. A concept that is born within the Join Up Dots story that we will bring to you today. In 1997, when he was 24, he started an Internet software consulting company. While he knew that it’d be fun to create software in the early days of the Internet, his primary goal when starting the company was to create a fun atmosphere — a clubhouse if you will — that people would love coming to every day. They had a successful business for four years, not breaking any records, but they were profitable, provided very competitive salaries, great benefits, and a really fun atmosphere. Can all good things last? Well of course we hope that will always be the case, but in the case of our guest it wasn’t to be (at least not in the short term) After four years, their biggest client, because their promised second round of funding didn’t materialize, went out of business. With no money in the company bank account, less than $500 to his name, and a payroll of $40,000 due in 2 days, it was clearly time to shutter the doors. He summoned the team (of 10 guys at the time) to the conference room, and with tears, told them that I loved them, that we’d had a great run, but it was time to go home. And that is where we will start todays show, as there is nothing like a good cliffhanger to hook you from the start. So is it wise to look at the environment before anything else or is this going to lead to less productive, professional staff? And what was the biggest learning that he has taken away from the journey so far? Mindset expert Andy Murphy is my guest today on the Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who can call himself a global mindset coach, with clients across the world who seek him out to help them go to the next level. At the age of only 26 he opened a company developing a project to build a 100 Million dollar resort in the Fiji Islands. After marketing the company over in Dubai along side multi billion dollar developments the global real-estate industry began to slow down and he had a decision to make. After so much success would he batten down the hatches and go into survival mode? She is an internet business lawyer whose mission is to show business owners like us how to cover our "assets" online without having to spend a lot of money on legal fees. As the founder of Cover Your Assets Online.Com she has created a Do It yourself Legal Toolkit so that entrepreneurs could protect not only their business assets but their homes, cars and investments Which is all interesting stuff, but what has lead her to this point Well her first career was as a TV news reporter and anchor in Toronto, where she won a couple of CanPro awards as well as a New York Film Festival award for news documentary, which delved into the topic of adoption. When her husband’s career took them to the U.S, she decided to switch careers and follow her long time dream of going to law school. She applied to the Roger Williams School of Law, which was 20 minutes from her house in Providence, RI. and practised for several years and then decided she wanted to be a coach. So internet laywer, business coach how do these things join up together. Well, i suppose at her heart she is a fixer. She loves to see an issue and bring a solution to the table As she says "I became a coach at the age of six, when I saw my parents fighting for the first time. I remember thinking, ‘I can fix this, if they would just listen to me.’ As an attorney, I always wanted to help people fix their lives so they wouldn’t need to hire me again. As a TV news reporter, I was always drawn to the personal interest stories. I’m a big sap, but I’ve come to believe that I have a duty to get my ass to Happy and have learned how to do that. I was born to help others do the same, to get up off their asses to live lives that are on fire (instead of being burnt out). It's a truth that so many people will speak, or at least they convince themselves that it is a truth. "That if it was that easy then everyone would be doing it" They say those words when they dont want to put themselves into the position to fail, and so cling onto this truth as a comfort blanket against failure. So is it easy to become an entrepreneur? Is it easy to create a business from scratch so that you can sit on the beach with a cocktail or two and simply watch your bank account increase exponentially? No not at all, and there is certainly a good deal of pain in making something amazing happen There’s a lot of lip service paid to the value of going the extra mile, doing a little more, over-delivering and a host of other tired old expressions. There isn’t a whole lot of discussion on the value of suffering, which trumps all the other aforementioned areas combined. If you want to achieve something outstanding and get results you never got before, you’re going to have to suffer. You will have to go against your inner voice that tells you to hold back, stay in the routine you’re comfortable with and play it safe. Do you have to suffer every single moment? Absolutely not. But make no mistake about it, to get from where you are to where you want to be you’re going to have to suffer. To get what you’ve never gotten before you must do what you’ve never done before. And doing what you’ve never done before often is somewhere between uncomfortable and downright painful. So if you ever hear someone say the words to you "If it is that easy then everybody would be doing it" just smile at them and know that they will be saying those very same words for the rest of their lives. That comfort blanket is very hard to throw off once you have started wrapping it around you.

Life design is all the rage nowadays, and my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man with an amazing story of taking life by the scruff of the neck and turning full circle to where he wanted to be. As he says "After failing to get much of an education I set up an online business, selling books. This fuelled my passion for all things literary but the business failed. In order to pay the mortgage I started work stacking supermarket shelves at night. During the day I made a career plan to turn things around. In late 2004 I joined the still relatively young online gambling industry, working in a call centre. 5 years later I co-founded a company (which I subsequently sold) and went on to manage operations in the UK, Central and Eastern Europe. From 2013 to 2016 I was CEO of SKS365 Group. I am now a full time consultant, investor & advisor in one or two startups and, more importantly, I am embarking on a career as a writer, writing about mountains and the outdoors. In other words I am following my passion." And this is what makes him the perfect guest for a show like Join Up Dots, as in late 2016 he quit the rat race to redesign his life in a way that was more satisfying, interesting and adventurous both in his personal and professional life. He didn't know how to accomplish the large and vague objective of "living better", although he knew it meant being more entrepreneurial and spending more time outdoors! So he embarked on a career writing about mountains, adventure and his journey of redesigning his life and through his website the Armchair mountaineer he is showing all of us how to take control of our lives. So is it as simple as making a firm decision to do something, even if you haven't got all the dots lined up and doing it? Join Up Dots has always been about letting you the listener grow the confidence to tackle all obstacles head on. She was a student at The College of New Jersey, obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies, before starting in 2016––a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counselling from The College of New Jersey. Which of course is impressive but not remarkable. However added to the fact that she was born with an eye disorder called, Cone Dystrophy, which has now progressed to the state where she is blinded by all lights, you can see that she has a powerful mindset to achieve. My mission in life is to continue to help spread awareness about mental and physical disabilities and with her book Now I See: How I Battled Blindness, Mental Illness, an Espresso Habit and Lived to Tell the Tale flying off the shelves it looks like things are going the right way after all. So when she was first diagnosed with her condition did she understand instantly how it would change her life? And how has she overcome the depression and mental issues that could have had her hiding away in the dark, instead blazing brightly across the world? Fancy a bit of housesitting to earn some money? Well it’s an absolute delight to have on the Join Up Dots free podcast interview, two ladies who literally bound around the world like some excited Labradors. And believe me that might not sound like a compliment, but it certainly is. As the two of them have had some huge setbacks in life, but haven’t allowed them to lose their spirit for life, and their desire to create adventure in their relationship. After originally meeting in 2010 at a course in Sydney, called ‘The Quest for Truth’ it became evident that the quest for truth, was going to be linked with their love of travel. A few years back, after leaving Australia, they entered into a business opportunity in Dubai, which of course they thought would be a good move, but turned out to be anything but. Or so hey would have thought at the time, but as we see literally everyday on Join Up Dots, the darkest times in our lives become the moments where we find our true paths. Left with literally nothing, they had to reassess what they wanted to do, and how they wanted to do it….with the caveat of making it as cheap as possible. With a mere $300 in their pockets they decided to start travelling through house-sitting as a way to save money on the rent they could no longer afford. They figured if they could save themselves rent and utility bills for six months or so, they could get back on our feet… and then go and do something they really wanted to do, which of course would involve travel. But actually they had found it already, and now are the creators of the international housesitting community, where they share their knowledge and experience with anyone who has that desire for the nomadic lifestyle….which I think most of us have at one time or another. So do they look back at Dubai, and go “Do you know that was truly the making of us…we wouldn’t change a thing!” And do they believe that within all of us is a business that can be built purely on our passions, leading to a life that we love? My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a startup expert who has worked so hard to where he is today, he has more lessons learned before the age of 30 than most people aged…well 30. He is proof that hard-work and determination pay off’s as he climbed the ladder of the restaurant industry as many do: with a great deal of empathy, a little bit of luck, and a massive amount of overconfidence. After graduating from Harvard in 2009, he worked his way up from being a busboy in Boston to being a beverage director for Momofuku in New York City, where he managed the buying, pricing, and selling of wine, beer, and spirits for the restaurant. Through living through this experience, he decided that he wanted to have more ownership of the guest experiences he was creating, so he took to Chicago to see how Booth could help him open his own restaurant. While attending Booth, our guest met his business partner, Hunter Swartz, and the two quickly realized that their shared background in endurance sports mixed with complementary work experiences could build something remarkable. He then joined the Eastman Egg team in January 2014 and served as COO for three years where in his time there, the company grew to four operating units and grew its revenues and team each by a factor of 10. And now he is also the author of the latest book to fly off the shelves with “What I Learned Before 30 – a biographical look that captures some of the best, and worst, moments of his life. As it says in the intro “I feel like i’ve finally learned that growing up to have different perspective than my parents was not a failure; it was the whole point. I cant wait to use the next 30 years to celebrate what makes us different, rather than resent it, and enjoy what a diverse, unique and wonderful family we are” So, said in another way, he has found the path in life that is the right one for him...creating startup guides for people to follow, and although others may not understand it makes no difference. And that is where we should all be, walking boldly into our own future and not one that has been constructed by the idealism of anyone else. Life Coach is a word that you see everywhere today. But are you born a life coach or do you need to live a life of ups and downs? Well today’s guest joining on the Join Up Dots show is a lady who I first connected with several years ago, but never got a chance to properly say hello to. Which is a bit of a regret, as not only is she a truly lovely individual but is also based in this little island of ours: Yep, she is based in rainy Manchester in the United Kingdom and since working for British Telecom as a Call Centre Trainer has been on a mission. A mission to develop employees everywhere to become the best that they can be, and find happiness whilst they are doing it. And she certainly seems to now have found her thing, after as much struggle as everyone else As she says “I’d love to be able to say I’m one of those people who is so super clever, I built a successful coaching business easily. But that would be a big. Fat. Lie. I spent my first year as a coach taking every course I could get my hands on, which led to massive overwhelm. It became a patchwork quilt of information: a course on blogging, another for WordPress, another on podcasting, then copywriting. But it wasn’t cohesive. I wanted courses to help me go step-by-step so I could focus on what I loved, coaching.” And so how has she done it? How has she managed to blend her years of being an employee into someone who is crushing it, but also being totally themselves…being happy in the process? Media and getting noticed in the media is a hard game to crack. However my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady who spent over a decade working in an environment that ultimately left her looking for a new future (although with the media skills to make that future happen) Starting her career at News 12 The Bronx after leaving Ohio University with a BA in Public Affairs and Journalism she worked her way up through the ranks in television. She performed the roles of Reporter, Producer, Host, Web Editor, Fill-In Anchor, Media Relations Specialist for ABC News, CBS News, NBC News the list goes on and on. All the time her confidence was soaring, her experience was becoming broader and broader and her future was waiting. As she says "I worked as a TV reporter for a decade who was pitched numerous times a day by publicists. Most of the time, I didn’t read more than two sentences of what the “PR person” sent. What they sent was too long, didn’t have anything to do with what I covered, wasn’t newsworthy, didn’t relate to the geographical area I covered, and the list goes on. They all wanted a free commercial for their client. Because of this, I decided to leave the news business and do that job - but better. And she has certainly done that, becoming the owner of Media Maven, a full service public relations firm providing services in: Media Relations, Media Training, Still Photography, Video Production, Social Media, Writing, Blogging, Event & On-Air Hosting, Branding, Website Design, Graphic Design, and Search Engine Optimization. If you want to grow your personal brand in the right way, then this is the place you come. So did she need every bit of her ten years experience to get to where she is today, or could she have cut corners here and there? She is co-founder and President of Performance Support Systems, a global software company based in Virginia, where their products are used by leadership coaches and consultants as well as internal learning and development professionals to help managers become more effective leaders. There is one truth in my mind, that someone who develops all the leadership skills whilst climbing up the ladder quite often finds those skills very difficult to maintain. Is it the isolation that causes the issues, or perhaps the climb that wears them out? Well whatever it is our guest will have the answer I'm sure. She and her business partners have worked together for 25 years, and many of their clients and resellers have done business with them for 20 years. SEO is on the table today. And how to make SEO front and centre of every business. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who seems to me has found his thing in life. The thing that makes him bounce out of bed with excitement and enthusiasm. He is the CEO of Kansas City Website Design, who work with clients across the world building websites that not only look great, but also operate brilliantly too. Alongside his team, they work hard to make sure that the SEO element which is so important to gain Google rankings is built into the design to ensure visibility. As he says “Internet marketing is a lot like NASCAR racing. You need a fast car and a talented driver to compete and win – you can’t have one without the other. I build high performance websites and drive them to the top of the major search engines for my clients with organic search engine optimization and pay per click advertising management services. My approach to web development is laser focused on return on investment. I have a Contrarian view of website design which many of our competitors find distasteful, perhaps even blasphemous: Great web design is a commodity.” As is his passion for the task. And that is one side of what makes this guy perfect for Join Up Dots, as although he is now performing in a way that looks like it was a master plan right from the beginning, im sure we will find that just wasn’t the case. As his journey has taken him all over the world, He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has lived and travelled extensively in Asia for over ten years, based in Taipei, Taiwan, with stints in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong and now lives in Overland Park, Kansas with his wife Vivian and twin sons, Ely and Ostyn. And my favourite fact that in a way shows so much about how the guy operates, but he may be the world’s most successful SEO Internet marketer that has never had an active Facebook account. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a a guy who it seems is a born entrepreneur with a fascinating story to boot. Which makes him a perfect guest for a show like Join Up Dots. Growing up on the Shetland Islands – the most northerly tip of the UK, his first taste of entrepreneurship was running a small Dropshipping business whilst still at school. At 14, he used to buy electronics from China and sold them on eBay whilst building his first ever website at 14 years old, which still gets sales to this day! Leaving the islands at aged 18, he knew University wasn’t for him and lucky enough to be accepted into the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy in Manchester. As he says “The academy was an incredible experience – one in which I was pushed out my comfort zone on a daily basis, whether that was pitching, networking or just having to work incredibly hard. Things that are now a normal every day thing for me now – but certainly weren’t back then! It was in Manchester I launched a corporate well-being company called Alba Fitness, where he used to place personal trainers into corporate environments (such as call centres) to run corporate fitness programmes. However it really started to come together for him, when he realised that the trainers were generally terrible at marketing themselves. Secondly, he was reading a book called the 7 Day Startup – a book all about (you guessed it) launching a business in 7 days. On June 21st 2015, he finished the book. On June 29th 2015, Blue Cliff Media was born. He offered social media and community management services at the beginning but eventually carved ourselves a nice wee niche in Facebook advertising. The business continues to grow and have some amazing clients all over the world. So looking back on his life on the Shetland Islands, was it a blessing or a hindrance to his entrepreneurial venture? And is he where he wants to be in his life or simply on the first rung of what he can now see is possible for him? Digital Agencies have become big business for my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man with an amazingly unusual road to where he is today as a digital agency expert. Not least, as I discovered that his first job was a gravedigger at a Pet Cemetery, digging graves for Fido and Felix, and many other beloved pets who had used up their extended lifelines. But certainly his career might have seen dead and buried, but in fact it was just one of the big dots that has lead him to where he is today. Digging around the internet, spying on the competition and bringing the five steps of lead generation to life for his clients As the founder of Digital Agency School and the CEO of the marketing agency GoBeyond SEO, he believes that there are five stages that all businesses need if they want to floruish in their markets 1. Identify your ideal client 2. Research what works in your market (i.e. “spy” on your competition) 3. Craft a converting message and foot in the door offer 4. Build a funnel you can leverage 5. Analyze the data and optimize And this systems appears to be working wonders, as even though he started his agency with no experience, no marketing education or any connections in the industry he is certainly rocking and rolling. Now he wants to help other marketers launch their own agencies so they can build their ideal career & lifestyle and I suppose legacy. And isn't that what life is all about, helping as many people as you can to get their dream, and in the process getting your own one as a result. So how did he start Digital Agencies if he had no experience in it, and still make it a success? And does he look back at the time when he used to read the newspaper over the radio to blind people as useful in anyway to where he is now?
